The problem is, I suspect, that evangelical parents do not teach their
children about sex, contraception and avoidance of disease. What they
teach is abstinence, which, along with the rhythm method, leads
to...pregnancy.

What did the mother do? Obviously, a ****-poor job of preparing her
daughter for the side effects of sexuality.

A 17 year old gets knocked up and the blame is on the mother for not
explaining the birds and the bees?

By God Harry, we'll make a Republican out of you yet!

No its the mother's insistence that other children not be taught the
truth about contraception

The concept is lying by omission

I think this poor girl has had enough publicity. I think by now her mother
"gets it". I just tuned into some introductory remarks at the Republican
Convention, and they are adamant that they respect the privacy of certain
family matters and wish others would too. As much as hypocrisy on the part
of politicos gets my goat, there is absolutely no getting around it;
politicians are hypocrites. I hope those poor kids survive being in the
limelight without too much damage to their psyche, and I hope this becomes a
non-issue soon.

Through your life have you followed everything your parents taught you?

Teaching and acceptance by the student don't necessisarily go hand in hand.

Well, I agree the girl is off limits, but the mother certainly isn't.
I'm sure the Republicans would prefer this would just go away, but since
the mother makes such an issue of teaching "abstinence," and working to
make sure proper sex education and proper information about
contraceptives are not made available in the public schools, I think the
failures of such thinking should be an issue in this campaign.

Well, if the mother - and the Repubs - are smart, they will not make sex
education a campaign issue leading up to the election.
