Well, fortunately for us this is still a FREE country and that sort of behavior is tolerated here without a need for "newsgroup police." It's kinda' like a radio - if you don't like what the station is playing, then turn the knob. Wasting your time posting a message telling everyone what we already know is pointless. We've already figured out how to "turn the knob." I find it interesting that you'd make this response. It IS a "free country, as you stated, but a police officer, of all people, would understand that there are also limits to individual freedom. Perhaps, if he were to have prefaced his statement with the words "Absent any laws which prohibit......" first, you would have had less trouble accepting it? Dave Well, yes, and no. Usenet, in general, isn't structured with "laws". Different ISP's and news servers have (more or less) similar Terms of Service policies. Different groups have individual Charters and FAQ's, and the whole of it comes under Usenet Etiquette. None of this is "law". Most reasonable people abide by the principles. Regards, noah To email me, remove the "OT-" from OT-wrecked.boats.noah. ...as you were. ) Help me out here, I'm hard-pressed to recall a posting string you originated that was directly related to recreational boating. Have I missed the last 20 original bon mots of yours that related to recreational boating? As we age, our memory slips a bit. Perhaps you were busy posting. On 10/30, you posted a response to a post about a computer virus...then there were about a dozen posts about audiophile topies...about 30 concerning off-topic posts...then something about a freighter sinking in Albany...then about 20 complaining about me... I haven't been around as much as I normally would like to be. If it matters, my mother is quite ill. We all have "real life" problems now and then. Ahh. Sorry to hear that. -- Email sent to is never read. |

Rec.boats ??
....and you're all still missing the point. it's nothing to do with free
speech, news group police, name calling. it's "rec.boats" "JohnH" wrote in message ... On Sun, 14 Dec 2003 11:37:10 -0500, "Dave" wrote: It's been many months since I visited this newsgroup. I used to check in every few days or so, but haven't had the luxury of doing so for a long time because of demands on my time from work. I see from the first 1000 messages I've downloaded this morning, that a relatively small percentage of the posts here actually have anything to do with boating. Seems a handful of loudmouths have pretty much monopolized the group filling it with politics and personal snipping ... very disappointing. Thanks to all you blowhards for ruining what was supposed to be a forum for boating; maybe some of you self-aggrandized mental giants can suggest where one might find a boating forum that actually deals with boating? Try this: http://www.tidalfish.com/home.asp Just don't tell anyone else. Keep in mind that the boating season is over for many of us. I could report on each occasion I put the charger on my batteries, but that would get old quickly. John On the 'Poco Loco' out of Deale, MD |

Is he allowed to do it? Yep, all day, everyday. Does anybody want to read his crap? Probably not, which is why we have the ability to choose whether or not to read his crap. Don't misinterpret my originally posted poorly worded analogy as being on his side, I assure you that I'm not. But there's no law prohibiting him from being an idiot (unfortunately). So I guess we'll just ignore him. Actually, there are "newsgroup police", but not here. Just so I understand you correctly, who is "he" and "him"? You seem to be suggesting that "anything goes", but I may have it wrong. You're an ass, Noah. But you are entitled to be one. Thanks for your consent, Harry. I don't know what I would have done without it. You know, for a guy with your apparent intelligence, and obvious verbal skills, you never fail to initiate name calling and personal insults. I once valued your opinion, but no more. It is as valueless as your "debating style". I strongly disagree with the Off-topic posting taking over this group. If that makes me an ass, I'll live with it. Regards, noah Nah...it's not that you disagree that makes you an ass, Noah. It's the way you disagree. On the off-chance that you are being sincere, can you be specific? I think I have been pretty straightforward, without the name-calling. Regards, noah To email me, remove the "OT-" from OT-wrecked.boats.noah. ...as you were. ) Sure, I *can* be specific. ...I thought as much. Disappointing. Regards, noah Why do you think you're worth the bother, Noah? -- Email sent to is never read. |

Why do you think you're worth the bother, Noah? LOL! Perhaps because I gave you the respect of asking??? Please. Perhaps because I saw you as a leader in this group? Where's that damned airsick bag when you need it? Some poster here called me the "Alpha Male" of the newsgroup a week or so ago. I almost choked on my Kal-Kan. Perhaps because I thought we might have a rational discussion? As far as "worth the bother", I'm sure that you have far more important things to do. Happy Holidays, Harry. To put it into a single phrase, Noah, methinks you protest too much. Have a glass of wine and don't worry about it. This newsgroup was way off-topic when I first visited it about 10 years ago. The only thing that has changed is that as the righties proliferated, it got more off-topic and vile. Nothing much important to do tonight. My bride singlehandedly increased "national consumer confidence" at the malls today, and I played my usual role as package toter and designated driver. I'vo got a wood workbench I sawed out and finished to assemble so I can use it, but just don't feel like it. Drove on a bridge over the Pax River today and nary a boat was out on the water. Flat as a sheet of glass, looked like water looks just before it ices over. Happy Holidays to you, too. With one exception, *all* my clients are shut down from the 22nd to the first full week of January. But the creator is compensating for me; I have a household full of in-laws visiting. -- Email sent to is never read. |

The only thing that has changed is that as the righties proliferated, it got more off-topic and vile. We disagree. I will state what I think, as you do. When you came around (at least with the "Harry" nic, around 1995), there was little OT posting. It didn't hit "high-gear" until '98-'99. I would have no problem with "some" OT. I'm not the school-marm type. It is taking over the group, and that (IMO) isn't right. Why don't you direct some of your displeasure at the righties? Nothing much important to do tonight. My bride singlehandedly increased "national consumer confidence" at the malls today, and I played my usual role as package toter and designated driver. Flat as a sheet of glass, looked like water looks just before it ices over. Good for your bride. She *needs* to spend your money! You have way too much for a liberal Democrat! ) Hmmm. Actually, she was spending her money. I drove (nearly) the length of the Mohawk River (NYS Barge Canal) today, and didn't see one boat except for a sweet CC with twin Merc's, under tow. It looked like an offshore, and I have no idea what they were doing up here. It is a bit icy, chunky, and white. Did see one flock of about 200 Mallard ducks coming off the river near Canajoharie, headed South- a pretty sight. We were visited by about a zillion geese and ducks who I suppose are headed to Bal Harbour or wherever they winter. You think they're attracted by the bags of corn I toss out and the "Hunters Will Be Shot on Sight" signs I post? -- Email sent to is never read. |

I do hunt them, I'll be honest, but they are wonderful birds. Regards, noah One of the most beautiful sights boaters on the Bay here see in the late fall: the geese on their way south. It's a breathtaking thing to see: huge flights, hundreds and sometimes a thousand birds in a vee that stretches as far as the eye can see. -- Email sent to is never read. |
