Default Virus Alert- email from rec.boats

noah wrote:
...just wanted to give everyone a "heads up".

I recently received a few emails from rec.boats users concerning my
FAQ questions, and also concerning "scareing" a 20hp Merc to put out
30hp.

Almost immediately, my rec.boats email addy started getting thumped
with virus attachments. I haven't sent the virus to McAfee yet, but
it is probably one of the current email worms or bugs. I update every
couple of days, use a firewall, and also use an email quarantine
utility, so it didn't get through to my system.

************************************************** ****************
Most of the virus email subjects repute to be a "Microsoft Security
Update", or related MS Upgrade. A few subjects referred to
"Undeliverable Mail".
************************************************** ****************

Be careful. Don't click on *any* executable (in this case it's 104Kb)
unless you know what it is.

Anyone who has emailed me recently should do a thorough virus scan,
with an updated protection program. It's a pretty good bet that one
of you has the virus, and it put me on the sucker list.

I so wish I could think of a quick and witty reply to this. Ideally, I
would tie it back to the virus for a secondary gag. I'll use the excuse
that my brain is numbed by alcohol, I just made a drink and took one sip.
Yea, that's it.... sigh

Yea, I've been getting those continuously since yesterday... about 50 times
so far. I also got a bunch of the latest worm attacks last week, but not
nearly as bad as the last time.

I feel neglected. . .I've only had to delete 21 since last night, Ron.

Noah, it might not be the fault of rec.boats' gentle readers; it could be
that your email address was harvested from an earlier post. I notice
you have munged your address slightly, but it was not always so.

Spammers use robots to cull email addresses from Usenet posts, so
** Never use your real email address when posting to Usenet! **

Make it easy to clean up, like Noah has done, if you really want
to be able get email from anybody on the planet with a news reader.

I've got several of these too since yesterday.

This is the W32.Swen.A@mm worm, a new worm that was first discovered on
September 18. For detailed information, see the following URL:

Yesterday Comcast was passing the entire 104K file and filled up my mailbox
by 3 pm. I lost a lot of my mailing list traffic.

Now they have some sort of filter that just says that they have deleted a
message. So far I have deleted over 300 of these things today. Shesh -
enough already!

The kiddies that are writing this trash should get a new hobby - perhaps
boating? Hmm, on the other hand - it would probably turn out that they would
take up wetbikes!
