As to the coffin covers, it is my understanding that they are to prevent the coffins from popping to the surface during the occasional flood or very heavy rain. Coffins are filled mostly with air and tend to float to the top. It would be rather disconcerting to see a loved one float by. Perhaps if you and your fishing buddies chipped in a couple bucks, you'd be able to buy enough gasoline to get there.
