I just don't get it I guess. I don't really think it's stupidity. Someone is
typing. Is it fear? That at least is understandable. I was reading somewhere
about Cheney's motivation (besides simple greed). He was frightened during
9/11, which is totally understandable. We all were. But the gross reaction
is what I don't get. It's as though all other factors in an equation are
simply missing.

When Bush/Cheney took office, they inherited few problems from the previous
administration. Sure, there were some, but nothing like what other
administrations have inherited, so I can see how they could be a bit
complacent about the bad guys, and mostly focused on their domestic agenda
(don't get me started on that).

After the attacks, the whole country supported the Bush admin. We were all
afraid, sort of duck and cover every time a plane went over. Ok. I get that.
During WW2, the same basic thing happened, including the Japanese
internment. But, in many ways that was much more of an existential threat
than a small organization in the middle of nowhere. Sure, they're dangerous.
No doubt. We needed to go after them. We went after them. Then the focus
shifted to Iraq.. wrongly, no doubt. But, the fear that Bush/Cheney felt...
they forced that down the throats of lots of people... perhaps willing
people, people who are either quite susceptible to it or who had underlying
fear.

It's an unthinking fear, a fear without any solid foundation in facts.
That's the truly scary part when I read some of these people's posts.

I'm usually a hopeful person, and I'm hopeful that there would be something
that those of us who are not constantly afraid can do for those who are
fearful.
