I was in Sears once getting a replacement pair of diagonal cutters.
Asked if their "for life" hand tool guarantee covered sinkage. Nearly
had a nice new big screwdriver until the not-too-bright clerk caught on.

If you are doing serious cruising you really need two sets of tools,
one set with just the basics and readily at hand since you will be
using them all the time, and a second larger set which can be stowed
away somewhere.

Nice quick-list. As small as we are, we have 6 tool/junk boxes. Our
first-line kit is the little red box that came with the engine, adding
some open-end wrenches, allen wrenches and one of those 6-in-1 hammers
with all the screwdrivers in the handle. In 10 seconds, I can pull that
out of the drawer nearest the companionway and handle most emergencies.

Add spare parts like impellers, bilge pumps, various switches, a variety
of caulks and gaskets.

Don't forget the duck/duct tape!

And if that won't fix it, it's really broken.

You've included some of my favorite "specialty" tools like the coat
hanger, but I've never felt the need for a brick. What do you use
that for if I can ask?

oh well you can beat on stuff with it, and toss it at stuff too. but
what i was really thinking was more of a firebrick so when you use a
blow torch or need to solder something you don't burn a hole in the
boat LOL. i know when i'm around the house i'm always picking up a
rock or brick and using it for something, and there's not many rocks on
a boat! it's also good for holding things down when the wind blows.

Hmmm...

Haven't heard one mention of "The Universal Wrench & Socket Set"*.

Better known as: Vice Grip Pliers.

* AKA "Polish Socket Set" for the politically incorrect.

You could string a few together and tie them around the discordant crew
members ankles........
