some cases it's needed based on the vessel and docking situation?

Yes... let's talk operational costs shall we... if only to substantiate your
claim to it being "inexpensive". I have a lot of experience with Sat Phones... I use them regularly for work related communications in extremely remote locations. I cannot see a viable use for one on a coastal cruiser. CM "Bobsprit" wrote in message ... Tell us Bob... what Sat Phone provider are you going to register with? No ... please Telus! We haven't picked one yet. My old unit was globalstar, which I actually got a deal on at the time through my local provider. I used it for my job at the time, but we have since switched to using the web. RB |

Nutsy,
I don't like to call anyone stupid, as we all have limits to our knowlege. However I've noticed a lot of questionable things in your post since you aguired your "POOKA BB" Why would you eed a watermaker if you didn't need to warrant an extented range? If you are talking about a watermaker to replace tankage you have to be considering a 'maker wth a power supply, correct? |

Okay Bob... that was a reactionary comment on my part....
My experience with sat phones is from their inception to current day. I have used many sat phone communications. I have arranged for sat phone video uplink to NYC investors on a rather viable source in the Arctic. Most of my company vehicles have had Sat Phone and GPS technology installed years before you were ever aware it could be done. The only other person on this group with similar experience would be Peter Wiley. It is a prohibitive expense to date... utilized by government agencies and businesses that require it's range for remote operation. Vessels crossing oceans generally lease the equipment and service. It is not a replacement for cellular service..... not yet. CM "Bobsprit" wrote in message ... You frickin idiot... you have cell phone coverage that is ten times as reliable as a Sat Phone!!! How stupid are you Bob? Wrong, wrong, wrong. The Sat phone ALWAYS works here. ALWAYS. The cell does not. I like your dumb comments that are clearly based on zero experience with the technology. I've actually had a Sat phone. Have you? RB |

Nutsy,
Cont----- With a power supply a fuel source is necessary which is another tankage problem and range LIMITER. Talk that one over with your "FRIG--ment of imagination Pooka friend" Ole Thom |

wrote in message Cell service is land based, and for reasons that are obvious to those with any understanding, cell towers are generally placed inland at a point where they often reach just far enough to serve those on shore. The only reason there is service in the LIS at all is because the signal sometimes manages to take advantage of the clear line of site. Cell phone companies are not at all concerned about cell coverage over water, anywhere. You are in dire need of an update in geography and current global technologies. You are sounding like Joe on the war in Irag. I have cell coverage 20 miles out to sea.... anywhere on the coast. There is no where in Nova Scotia that cannot afford me cellular coverage.... There is no place along the coast, or inland in Nova Scotia that remotely approaches the wealth of the land surrounding the LIS. Not even close. This is so stupid a statement on your part as to not require a response Bill.! CM |
