It may not be enough, but Norway has used it's oil wealth more
intelligently than most.

By the way, Norway's oil production has peaked.

Absolutely true, and they have a tremendous cash surplus. They have
taken advantage of the age of oil.

My point is that when that revenue stream erodes and the cash is used
..... what then?
This may sound harsh or crude, but it's much more difficult for all
concerned to take welfare benefits away from people than it is to have
never made them available to begin with. The Social Security program
in the US is a good example. Over the years it has become a political
hot button as changes are made, benefits are reduced or restricted (by
age) in attempts to keep it solvent.

Eisboch

Easy solution...take the earnings cap off Social Security, and apply the
tax to *total* income, no matter its source, and double or treble the
rates for income over a certain very high level, including "deferred"
income.

Is that "certain very high level" a few dollars more than you make?
Sort of like, we should have a extra tax that use more gas than your Parker/

As long as the benefits went out in proportion to who paid in, that
wouldn't be so bad.

That is, if you are really interested.

Herring, a military retiree, is already sucking on the taxpayer teat for
his health care.
I read your reply four times, and I don't see an answer to my question.
Perhaps you don't have one. That's OK, because I don't have one, either.
If you have a url for the details of Sen. Obama's universal health care
proposal, especially the part where he tells how it is to be funded,
please post it here and I'd be happy to go read it.

Hey, TJ! I'm 'Herring', the military retiree Harry is referring to. Don't
know why, but I'm he.

Yes, I'm already sucking on the taxpayer teat. But that's 'cause I fed the
taxpayer's cow for a bunch of years. Harry dodged the draft, so he is
sucking off the union members' teats.

In any case, you shouldn't argue with Harry. Get him to take you on his
lobster boat instead.

I'm beginning to see that. He sounds like the type that gives his cause
a bad name, no matter what that cause is. He also sounds like he's
bitter about not being rich, and he blames others for that, the current
government in particular. In reality, this country gives him more
opportunities to become one of those rich people he despises so much
than most others, but it isn't just handed to you by the government -
you have to go after it yourself. But, like many other bitter,
frustrated people, he can't see that. If you look to the government to
solve your problems for you, you're looking in the wrong direction.

Asset-wise, I'm probably one of those rich Americans Harry hates so
much. But maintaining those assets and keeping them debt-free keeps my
bank account low, most likely much lower than his. The government isn't
to blame for that, I am. I made a few decisions that turned out to be
mistakes. My business is weather-dependent, and all the old rules about
what to do no longer work as they once did. I have to adapt, make new
rules, and I'd be most pleased if the government would leave me alone to
work it out myself.

Of course, as we all know, had Al Gore won the Electoral vote back in
2000, we'd be another Norwegian-style utopia by now, with global warming
solved. Yeah, right. Liberals, Conservatives, there's little difference
in results. The only difference is in the pet projects they pursue.

TJ

Sounds like you've got the situation well in hand. Now they'll be talking
about the 27 dwarfs.

What business are you in?

It's cheaper too. US health care cost amount to over 15% GDP. Canada's
are less than 10% GDP.

A huge percentage of that 15% is comprised of the horrific price gouging
by drug companies and the equally horrific charges imposed by for-profit
hospitals.

Which is great if that is the only measure of good healthcare.

My oldest is an oncologist and without getting into detailed
specifics, because of her speciality, sees Canadians on a regular
basis.

I should say those who can afford to pay for quality care in that
particular speciality because the treatment protocols are light years
behind the US - those who can afford it, tend to live much longer than
those treated in Canada.

Not saying that is the rule - just an anecdote.

What are the IQ requirements these days? Apparently the "standards" keep
getting lowered for military service.
