When riding, the bike will track in the direction you are looking, simply due to unconscious reactions you make to seeing road ahead or objects on or in it. If you see and concentrate on a big pothole coming up in the road, you will naturally tend to head for it initially. That's where understanding effects like counter-steering becomes important. When we discuss this with our riders I call it "situational fixation"... the kids just call it "ohhhh shiny" ![]() Do you recall when we came across an alligator in the middle of the road on a curve. I forget how we instinctively dealt with that obstacle. It just comes naturally for me too like the day I hit that huge chunk of frozen slush... Had to countersteer and back and fourth a few times till the bike settled... But really I didn't do anything, my weight was fixed in a direction so the bike moved under me, I just stayed loose and let the geometry of my front end do the rest ![]() F'in magic. |

I do like the Isle of Man motorcycle races, which are also dangerous, of course, but they're more appealing to me. I also like to watch flat track motorcycle racing. I think Isle of Man is much more thrilling to watch and I used to ride motocross. My brother raced MX for a while and it was not at all kind to his body as he got older. I have significant painful back problems but he has much more serious issues. My daughter has a good friend who is now a disabled quadriplegic. College is a better choice in the long run. |

Again, I will stipulate that you can indeed start a turn with a countersteer but you don't have to. But still, once you are in the corner both street and mx, you are not countersteering... Yes you are, every correction within the turn is accomplished that way. Leaning by itself is nowhere near effective or fast enough. I've never seen a rider violently throwing his torso left and right to avoid a slight handlebar adjustment. (*perhaps* as a last resort in a long rut/berm) You position your weight on the bike for the best *average* center of mass for the turn which changes more slowly. Hey, maybe you should design a custom bike without handle-bars, think of the weight savings and lower COG. |

I wouldn't mind attending the races and riding the course at a sane speed a few times, just for grins. I think you have to really not give a **** about your body if you ride motorcross...the potential of damage to the spine is significant. |
