There was something different here and it was the actions of Martin Yeah, you're right. The guy was scared, he according to the phone conversation with his girlfriend, tried to walk away fast. Now please, you keep defending Zimmerman, so let's see this evidence you have that "the actions of Martin" led to his death. If you trust the girl friend, Martin never made a civil gesture to explain who he was and why he was there. Why should he? He probably thought he was being attacked by a man in the dark of night. I guess you are right, a thug does not have any reason to be civil to anyone. After all, this is private property, behind gates and fences and Martin was a stranger. The fight appears to have started immediately after Zimmerman asked "what are you doing here"? (again according to Martin's girlfriend.) Presumably the question was answered with a punch in the nose. If some strange man came up behind me at night when I'm doing nothing wrong and started acting strangely, he'd get the same thing. The only story we have is that Martin approached Zimmerman. Unless there is a witness we have not seen yet, that will be the only story we have. Everything else is speculation. I keep hearing that Martin did not need to explain **** but that is not really true. If you don't live in a gated community you do not understand. These people pay thousands of dollars a year to live behind gates so they will not have strangers walking around. Every resident is part owner of that street, that sidewalk and the grass in between. They have the same right to ask a stranger what they are doing there as you would have to ask someone why they were walking across your patio. And the stranger has no right to just walk away? Not really ... in Florida. On your property, you can pretty much shoot them and that is particularly true if they punch you in the nose and knock you down Harry would shoot you for that and he lives in a "retreat state" No, not unless the criminal had broken into the house. I don't walk around the yard "heeled." |

If they tell you that you don't "need" to eat all your peas, it doesn't mean you can't. That really sounds more like a liability issue for the police. If they imply that he should follow someone and they get hurt, the police would be liable. I have been to a number of NW meetings with the cops and they tell us it sure would be helpful if we can watch the person until they get there but be careful. In fact that is really the only way they actually catch anyone. If they see the guy a block away, he can say "it wasn't me". Theoretically they need "reasonable suspicion" even to do a "Terry stop". Gee, and I thought SW Florida was where all the "fancy" people lived. If I were you, I'd find a new neighborhood where the crime rate is lower and "neighborhood watch" is not such a big deal. "Crime" here is mostly kids drinking and smoking dope in the park with the occasional band of "car hoppers". They are always white kids and usually from the neighborhood. That still does not keep most of the people here from being scared ****less. I don't mind going out there to see what is going on myself and I talk to everyone I see. (unarmed) I suppose I will be killed someday but what the ****, it beats dying wheezing in a hospital from "old age" ;-) I am pretty good at defusing problems before they escalate and that is why I have said several times, if there was just an ounce of civility in that encounter from either one of them, Trayvon would still be alive and George would still be working at the insurance company. Perhaps neigborhood watchers who are as deep into vigilanteism as Zimmerman need to have psychological tests before their assume their duties of not walking around the 'hood armed and eager to be provoked. |

Pretty much. Have you seen the signs? They were photographed and put out on CNN All the signs said was that it was a neighborhood that had a neighborhood watch program. It didn't say that you couldn't be walking on the sidewalk. They also said trespassers would be arrested and prosecuted Zimmerman had no powers of arrest and prosecution. Well, the thing is this: In general, trespass laws apply to someone infringing on private property to which he or she has not been invited. Martin was indeed invited there. |
