Interested in feedback if you've got something like this. I think it's a mistake and that a guy should have an actual stereo system, even if this means getting rid of his roommate to make space in the dorm room. The prince doesn't agree. The 'kids' are hoked on the iPods or reasonable facimilie. No point fighting it. Some don't care, especially if they have to pay for it. Of my seven, only one has an Ipod. She paid for it after she found her whining about how she just "had" to have it meant just that. Wife was bugging me about buying one son an MP3 player. I looked around on the net and couldn't make heads or tails about what to buy. Finally told her to shut up, give him a hundred bucks and let him buy it himself, since he would know what he wanted. A couple days later we found he already had what he wanted. A 1 gig thing he got from Newegg for $12.95. Doubles as a thumb drive, plugs into his car stereo, blah, blah. My son has had one for a couple of years , and asked for a new model this Christmas. Of course his mom ran right out and plopped down $400.00 + taxes for it. It was a lot cheaper back in the days of the old 45s. Not sure about that. Most of the music kids have is pirated stuff. --Vic |

In interviews, lots of musicians complain that they go to the trouble to create albums, not just individual songs. Some kids never get to hear the albums. And, they never see liner notes, which can lead to new musical discoveries. Buy an album, and find that maybe it's got Victor Wooten on bass. Buy a Victor Wooten album, and discover a drummer you like. Buy his album, and find a guitarist you never heard of. Pretty soon, you're broke, but you have lots of great music. |

Dunkin' Donuts had the same effect on fine pastries. Whatcha gonna do? I'll be sure to tell my kids what you said, and they'll probably say they can find the liner notes on the web if they're interested. Or that they don't care about liner notes. You musicians have to look out for yourself and get people arrested and tossed in jail for stealing music. It's a dog eat dog digital world. --Vic |

Yeah, but that's a different issue. I'm all for artists getting paid for their work. It's not just kids who think anything digital should be free. I worked with a guy - highly paid, outwardly high morals - who could not understand how using ??? - I forgot, but it was the big peer to peer that soon thereafter got outlawed - was stealing. He was more in love with technology than I, and he just about blew his top when I said most internet use was for porn. That was fun. --Vic |

If we eliminate HD radio from the discussion for the moment, an iPod is probably no worse than listening to FM radio, which munges up the music to an extent. My son's at least using music files pulled directly from CDs for the most part, without any compression that he's applied. So, at least he's not at the mercy of radio stations. But then, he's listening with earbuds, which suck, according to my ears. I offered to get him a set of nice Sennheiser 400-series open air headphones, but he's not interested. He's always right, ya know?- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - How can he be always right? My 8 year old son and 12 year old daughter are both always right. So if three people are always right, that means they'd have to agree on everything, and that's impossible. My two can't even agree on what to have for supper! As of August, my son said Dave Brubeck was a snore. Last week, he said Dave Brubeck was god. It's amazing how much Brubeck changed since August.- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - Ah, enlightenment! |

So many people's computers were turned useless by Kazaa's spyware, and required reformatting/OS reinstall. Lots of geeks made money doing that for customers. |

I like having the liner notes from CD's. I'm sometimes amazed at who has played on certain songs with the lead artist, who produced, etc. |

My son was home then, and put it on my computer, which was the only one in the house. Being a geek, I fixed it myself with no reinstall. And he got his first computer. --Vic |
