This is a 6'7" kayak, which I've been paddling for the past year and a
half:

I think you could lose a little mass off your paddle shaft, there, buddy!

But that's my heavy duty bent shaft, it's supposed to be heavier! Notice
the specially made for size forked end?

I'm not Wilko but I can help with some insight in this area since I have
been in the paddling industry for some time. Part of that time I repped for
a company that sold wet suits along with many other things. The differences
between one wet suit from another if very big. You can get a wide variety
of thickness so one can use a suit on the summer and another can use one
diving is Alaskan waters. The same goes for hoods, booties, socks and
gloves. Some suite can get so thick that they are not good to use for
paddling since paddlers need good range of motion. This is the simple
explanation. I hope it helped.

You're not me? So much for me being on two continents at the same time! ;-)

Seriously though, you said it much better than I could have. Thank you
for the explanation!

If I had a buck for every idiot I've seen out paddling on water
in the 40's in nothing
more than jeans or shorts and a T-shirt, I could retire tomorrow. All
too often, their attitude is just like that of a couple we spoke with
that was out in a tandem so dressed, with no PFD's or spray skirts. When
we explained the dangers to them, their response was "Well, we weren't
planning on going in the water." Duh!

Whenever I go out with an inexperienced paddler, I wrap them in their
immersion gear and we go swimming. I tell this, this is "the worst thing
that will happen to you all day." Most act chilled for a few moments and
then, as the water stops circulating in the wetsuit, are quite happy.
Generally, this keeps them from adopting that particular attitude (which
is probably just as common amongst those who don't paddle with me).

Maybe Cousteau invented wetsuits? Not according to this, although it
does credit him with inventing the SCUBA tank.

I read his book. His claim was that he invented the regulator. The tank
was available (since there were already needs for compressed air and
tanks were quite available after WWII). I think there is some doubt
whether he, or his buddy (Dumas?), who actually invented the regulator,
even.

Still, interesting character, to say the least. Watching him evolve from
a callous intruder into the depths into one of its greatest caretakers
was interesting, to say the least.

It's a rude wakeup call, but it is alot easier to answer the phone when
we're at the start of a paddle, than when were way out, and half way
there! Once we do this our inexperience resume is considerably reduced,
and our experience resume is seriously increased. That is the part of
paddling that separates the men and boys. Alot of folks may think that
going out to whale watch, etc. is the purpose, but I suspect that we
have to be willing to develope a more itimate relationship with the
water itself. Most folks are not willing to pay their dues, and decide
that paddling is not for them. Enjoying the total experience! TnT
