I think possibly the plan was to loot the aunt's purse or other known
stash, and run if spotted, relying on the mask to avoid being caught.
A logical but admittably thin theory.

Thin, but logical... The kid probably figured the old lady would be easy
and wouldn't recognize him..

Where do you get the notion that she was "old"? You sure are trying hard
to fit the FOX agenda.
