As bad as it is, I hope that turns out to be the case. Turns out the
house he was "breaking into" was his Aunt, his Fathers Sister. Would be

I am not suggesting it was, and I haven't heard anything that would lead
me to believe that... I do wonder what kind of "weapon" the kid had, and
why he wouldn't know his dad would probably be armed with a firearm... I
know I would not have "moved toward" a known armed person, I would yell,
"dad, don't shoot".... Just sayin'.

I think possibly the plan was to loot the aunt's purse or other known
stash, and run if spotted, relying on the mask to avoid being caught.
A logical but admittably thin theory.

I imagine it was his burglary tool. Creeping around at 1AM in a mask
is far from a prank. I probably would have given him a chance to
identify himself and give up but that would be a one time offer with a
1 second expiration date.

Really? Think this 15 year old kid had chosen burglary as his
occupation? He's in the 9th or 10th grade in a nice neighborhood with
nice schools.

Occupations aren't usually chosen at 15. Stupidity is customary in a
15 year old. You have him cast as a thief without knowing a bloody
thing about him or the circumstance.
