Yes, I've set a bead on a tire with starting fluid before. It works

How do you touch it off ?

Well, if you value your fingers you don't use matches or a lighter,
I've used a torch myself.

But I've seen guys throw a match to the opening where you spray a
light shot of starting fluid to the tire and rim.

There's lots of youtube vids on it.

A match throw is OK, but I'd just as soon set it off with a torch,
though....
