Eisboch Well, you probably will need a union ID. That's what the unions do during legislative meetings...you can't get in without some sort of appropriate ID...but with two million souls on the mall, it could easily get out of hand! :) Being the 56,723rd person to climb into a porti-potty on the mall is a scary thought. Getting out of town is going to be a bitch, too. The only good way is to wait for the crowds to thin out a bit and then head for a metro station not well known to the touristas. |

When I was stationed in Annapolis during my last two years in the Navy, we would often zip down to DC on weekends and hang out at the museums and/or walk the various sites. It was always fun, you learned something during every visit and I got to know how to drive in and out with no problems. We would leave our house early in the morning, get a full day in in the Capital area, and be home for dinner. I often used to get a parking place on the street right across from the Smithsonian's main entrance. I'll bet all that has changed now. Eisboch |

Eisboch Actually, the last few times we went to any of the museums, we found on-street parking no more than a block away. We tend not to go, though, during tourist season, unless there is someting spectacular and short-term at one of the art galleries. There's also parking where my wife works, and it's only a block from there to the Metro. |

No need to worry about driving into DC and all of the freaking non-law abiding bicyclist, one-way streets and parking meters and general hassle of driving. |

If the Metro is ever extended to Tysons Corners, why...I might go out there again! I'd like to see the Metro extended to Annapolis, and also to the old race track in PeeGee County, but there's no money for that. |

Eisboch Summertime is a bear for parking at the mall, although if you get there early enough, it can be done. It's much more convenient to park at one of the outlying metro stations and take the metro to the Smithsonian stop. -- * Procrastinate Now! * John H |
