Ed muttered:
Oh, btw, what are you building now? This is a boat building group... no? I'm still working on my 8' kayak for my daughter. Like I did something wrong by using my business signature line? I too have an interest in boat building. And I happen to enjoy following and occasionally contributing to several NG's on a wide range of topics. I've never had virus software running and I've never had a problem. Then you guess it will never happen to you. This is EXACTLY how viruses spread. I'm sorry if I caught you on a bad day there Ed. If you go back and read my original reply, you'll see I was only offering my help and I certainly did nothing to prompt such a response from you. I'd say (without sounding like an "Eyeore") that I'm a pretty insignificant participant and a relative new comer to boot in this group. I see no reason why anyone would have me in their address book. I think it is more likely that there are "email address harvester" programs which scan the groups. And, your comments about not scanning properly... it's like saying burglary victims are to blame for not having guns to shoot those breaking in. Both statements are utterly rediculous and stupid. The people doing the hacking are the ones to blame. I've never had virus software running and I've never had a problem. The sad thing is that by saying that, there is some nutcase out there who sees it as a challenge. Oh, btw, what are you building now? This is a boat building group... no? It sounds like you have not considered the most common method of distribution- The virus usually emails itself to all in the infected address book. Where you should place blame is on the individual for not using a current antivirus to protect their PC. Many folks fail to keep their virus definitions updated thereby giving viruses a chance to spread. Whoever is doing it is going through several (if not all) newsgroups... luckily my server has a virus filter and it hasn't been a problem. I've been getting multiple spams and virii (sp?). So sad... to feel like you (figurative, not you in particular) have such an inconsequential and empty life to feel the need to do the spam/hacking thing.
