Somebody Doesn't Like This News Group
I'd say (without sounding like an "Eyeore") that I'm a pretty
insignificant participant and a relative new comer to boot in this group. I see no reason why anyone would have me in their address book. I think it is more likely that there are "email address harvester" programs which scan the groups. And, your comments about not scanning properly... it's like saying burglary victims are to blame for not having guns to shoot those breaking in. Both statements are utterly rediculous and stupid. The people doing the hacking are the ones to blame. I've never had virus software running and I've never had a problem. The sad thing is that by saying that, there is some nutcase out there who sees it as a challenge. Oh, btw, what are you building now? This is a boat building group... no? I'm still working on my 8' kayak for my daughter. Er...let me guess:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.0.2) Gecko/20030208 Netscape/7.02 That's what it says on your header, anyway - dedicated newsreaders make headers optionally visible - so you can bet the harvesters can read at least this much... No... and almost as unlikely (I think) if you have a "spamblocker" in your return email address. I think what happens is someone has a program that reads a list of messages and extracts the email addresses it finds. Then, the sender (probably automatically) sends the spam/virus to all the addresses. Oh, btw, what are you building now? This is a boat building group... no? I'm still working on my 8' kayak for my daughter. Like I did something wrong by using my business signature line? I too have an interest in boat building. And I happen to enjoy following and occasionally contributing to several NG's on a wide range of topics. I've never had virus software running and I've never had a problem. Then you guess it will never happen to you. This is EXACTLY how viruses spread. I'm sorry if I caught you on a bad day there Ed. If you go back and read my original reply, you'll see I was only offering my help and I certainly did nothing to prompt such a response from you. But I also know I have little control over what these "script kiddies" turn loose on the web. I DO have control over what my PC sends out and it is the responsibility of EVERY PC OWNER (including me) to prevent viruses from spreading. One very effective plan is to arm with the latest A/V tools. None of us should say "Oh it won't happen to me". This is how viruses are spread. From the original post I thought I sensed a mis-understanding of viruses. My time spent on this topic is only an attempt to help you all out by preventing the further spread of viruses. We all should be part of the solution. Anyone who has no up to date A/V is part of the problem. I did not intend to "ruffle any feathers". Larry, there is a hidden danger in such an attitude. No matter how up to date your AV is, it doesn't have the virus that some spotty freak with relationship issues has just written on daddy's computer. The best AV that I have is me. The only emails I open are from people I know, and if there is an attachment or if it is unexpected I send them an email to confirm that they sent the email, it's content and that they checked it for viruses. It's a little more hassle than just running an AV program on it, but so far, it's 100% effective. Al |

you missed my point. I wasn't saying don't use one, just that they aren't a
100% effective solution - like contraceptives, you have to be careful and vigilant. Al |
