Or does anybody down there care? What a piece of work he is. Eisboch Bush was re-elected. Bush's screw-ups are far worse than Nagin's. Krause, you are too predictable. Before Katrina, the feds warned New Orleans (run by that Dem genius Nagin) and the state of La (led by the corrupt and inept Dem. Blanco) to evacuate, they dithered until it was too late and people died. Even worse, the levees were failing weeks before Katrina as revealed by reports of salt water coming up from under where the levee eventually failed. The city of NO run by Nagin did nothing at all. It was actually fortunate that Katrina hit because there was a partial evac. The Levee was going to fail soon and it was blind luck it did during Katrina and not some minor storm where they did not evacuate and then the death toll would have been really high. This time round, we have a competent Repub governor who will ride Nagin to make sure things get done. Lets see what happs. they had worked out a pan with the incompetent bush and his criminal buddies like "heckovajob" brownie but as the city was being destroyed he found he had a fund raiser that was more important than the port city that services the heartland of the country. no mayor has the capability to evacuate any city. and telling people with nowhere to go and no cars to get there is rather hopeless. but nothing is ever georges fault is it. he has gotten his way on everything and gotten everything he asked for yet things are totally screwed up and none of that is his fault. yeah that's because he's done a "heckova job" too. Ray, try reading. Under the pre-Katrina hurricane plan, Nagin had authority, responsibility AND the means (those flooded buses) to evacuate the city. A year before Katrina He had attended a conference on this very topic where he agreed on this. Safe evacuation areas had been pre- decided. His failure to follow the plan that his office drew up is criminal. In addition, the Gov of a state (at least in LA and FL) has the authority to order such an evac. Blanco did not until she was almost ordered to do so by Bush. Now Brownie was a bozo but that does not excuse the criminal negligence by Nagin and Blanco. no the feds had the responsibility. and 100 school buses that hold 40 people aren't going to evacuate a city of several hundred thousand. nothing is ever the chimps fault is it. \ the Feds had no responsibility. They are prohibited from sending in the troops until the state asks. They did not. Nagin did not ask, the Gov did not ask. I was there the next year with Habitat Fro Humanity in Slidell when the election was be contested. could not believe the statements that Nagin was only mayor for 3 years, what could he do? And they reelected him sad. I have spent a lot of time in NO over the years and even before katrina it was the filthiest city in North America. My main memory of NO is the smell of raw sewage and that was several years before Katrina. The problem with NO is that it has the most corrupt pols in the USA. people in NO are more afraid of the police than they are of criminals. Nagin refused to order an earluier evac simply because he was afraid of losing lucrative convention business. He also could have used the Nat Guard to better prep the Dome and the convention center for sheltering people but he did not because he was afraid of hurting business. Nagin and Blanco completely ignored their own hurricane emergency plan and should be hung from lamp posts on Bourbon St. Monday, August 29 7AM CDT - KATRINA MAKES LANDFALL AS A CATEGORY 4 HURRICANE [CNN] 7:30 AM CDT - BUSH ADMINISTRATION NOTIFIED OF THE LEVEE BREACH: The administration finds out that a levee in New Orleans was breached. [AP] MORNING - MAYFIELD WARNS BUSH ABOUT THE TOPPING OF THE LEVEES: In the same briefing, Max Mayfield, National Hurricane Center Director, warns, "This is a category 5 hurricane, very similar to Hurricane Andrew in the maximum intensity, but there's a big big difference. I also want to make absolutely clear to everyone that the greatest potential for large loss of lives is still in the coastal areas from the storm surge. . I don't think anyone can tell you with any confidence right now whether the levees will be topped or not, but there's obviously a very very grave concern." [AP] MORNING - BUSH CALLS SECRETARY CHERTOFF TO DISCUSS IMMIGRATION: "I spoke to Mike Chertoff today - he's the head of the Department of Homeland Security. [White House] 4:30PM CDT - BUSH TRAVELS TO CALIFORNIA SENIOR CENTER TO DISCUSS MEDICARE DRUG BENEFIT: "We've got some folks up here who are concerned about their Social Security or Medicare. BATAAN SITS OFF SHORE, VIRTUALLY UNUSED: "The USS Bataan, a 844-foot ship designed to dispatch Marines in amphibious assaults, has helicopters, doctors, hospital beds, food and water. It also can make its own water, up to 100,000 gallons a day. And it just happened to be in the Gulf of Mexico when Katrina came roaring ashore. The Bataan rode out the storm and then followed it toward shore, awaiting relief orders. "Chimpenfuhrer" is not a term I've heard before, but it seems apt. Perhaps your view of the real world is clouded by the number of righties in here who feel compelled to defend Bush's every failure. |
