In oglegroups.com,
Tim
sprach forth the following:

Your tax dollars at work!

Who cares if someone is hurting themselves?

Because drug use often results in crimes on others to obtain money to
support the habit, especially with hard drugs like cocaine.

Quiz time, Jim. Think about violence related to the manufacture,
transport and sale of alcoholic beverages. When is the last time you
heard of that kind of violence SPECIFICALLY related to booze?

That has nothing to do with Fred's question. Nice try.

It has everything to do with it. But, I'm not surprised you missed it. Hint:
Forget the words "drug use" and think about the word "crimes". Or,
substitute "violence".

Of course, the laws of supply and demand tell us that this seizure
will cause the street value of cocaine to rise, which of course
encourages traffickers to take even greater risks to bring it in, and
results in more increased crime as users attempt to support their even
more expensive habits. The inflated street value also leads to more
violent turf battles over dealing territory on the streets.

This is an observation, not an answer, and I certainly don't want to
take anything away from the hard work that the Coast Guard put in to
make such a large bust. It just seems like the war on drugs is like
running on a treadmill- no matter how hard you run, you never really
get ahead.

Exactly. All businesses adapt, or they vanish. This is free enterprise. The
American way.
