Outboards - 2 vs 4 Cycle
In smaller shops they people talk like 4 cycles are a disaster waiting to
happen. The larger ones seem to think they are the best thing since sliced bread. What is the truth. |

Outboards - 2 vs 4 Cycle
Just my opinion.
Small boat..weight is a factor ...no trolling..need lots of hole shot = 2 cycle Larger boats..... lots of trolling ... need good gas mileage.... Do not need good hole shot = 4 cycle Evinrude E-Tec.. nobody knows, but if it works out..best of all worlds -- RichG http://groups.msn.com/CarolinaSkiffOwners |

Seeing that they have been building modern 4 strokes for a long time and few problems in cars and the outboards are just dry sumped like every NASCAR and circle track car in the country, they should last a long time with few problems. (Great run on sentence). The modern 2 stroke with oil injection for lub and the fuel only going into the cylinder, plus high pressure air pumps, etc., and no cooling of the piston by the fuel air charge, leads me to believe that the 2 stroke is the disaster waiting to happen. Only OB's I have are a 1986 old technology 15 hp Mariner, that is a low hours motor that runs great. And a 2 year old Yamaha T-8 4 stroke, that is a dream to fish and troll with. Quiet, no smell, no smoke. My main engine is also a 4 stroke, but it comes from Ford originally. Bill |

Outboards - 2 vs 4 Cycle

What is the truth. The basic 4 cycle engine has been around for a long, long time! Even though they have not been big sellers until recently 4 cycle outboards have been around for a long time as well. One reason for the big push towards 4 cycle outboards is that the conventional 2 cycle engine is getting outlawed from many lakes and some states (like California). In order to meet the emission regulations you either need a 4 cycle or one of the new 2 cycle motors. 4 cycle I know and understand. It is a proven technology and they aren't pushing any limits. The new 2 cycle engines, on the other hand, have not survived the test of time. Rod |

Outboards - 2 vs 4 Cycle
I have a 2002, 90 honda 4 stroke, 2001 225 Ficht DFI 2 stroke and a 2001 250
johnson carb 2 stroke all on commercial boats. The first 2 have around 500 hours on them and the Johnson has about 200 hours. They all work wonderfully and I have no complaints about any. Outboards - 2 vs 4 Cycle
The new EPA laws that are coming up i belive 2006 any new Outboard to be sold
in the USA is to be four stroke or meet Low emmison like the yamaha HPI. Nothing wrong with either engine. 2 strokes great Power to weight ratio. 4stroke great gph. and with the rising fuel prices. which in effect will in turn raise 2stroke oil prices up too. I say the one that saves you the most money down the road. But grant it all new models will have some bugs with em and a few of the outboard company kinda of let the public find the little problems for em. Which they have done in the past with 2strokes. Funny thing is i use to work for a small dealership we loved the four strokes and after 10years with them and the owners retired, The new company that took over and had like about 4 other shops in the state had thier heads in the sand about 4strokes and refused to send the Mech's to the update semniars and schools. So as for the next couple of years its a matter of choice. In article , says... In smaller shops they people talk like 4 cycles are a disaster waiting to happen. The larger ones seem to think they are the best thing since sliced bread. What is the truth. |
