Default Outboards - 2 vs 4 Cycle

In smaller shops they people talk like 4 cycles are a disaster waiting to
happen. The larger ones seem to think they are the best thing since

sliced
bread. What is the truth.

The larger shops have sent their people to "4 cycle school" the smaller

shops
are stabbing in the dark.

Seeing that they have been building modern 4 strokes for a long time and few
problems in cars and the outboards are just dry sumped like every NASCAR and
circle track car in the country, they should last a long time with few
problems. (Great run on sentence). The modern 2 stroke with oil injection
for lub and the fuel only going into the cylinder, plus high pressure air
pumps, etc., and no cooling of the piston by the fuel air charge, leads me
to believe that the 2 stroke is the disaster waiting to happen. Only OB's I
have are a 1986 old technology 15 hp Mariner, that is a low hours motor that
runs great. And a 2 year old Yamaha T-8 4 stroke, that is a dream to fish
and troll with. Quiet, no smell, no smoke. My main engine is also a 4
stroke, but it comes from Ford originally.
