Default Outboards - 2 vs 4 Cycle

In smaller shops they people talk like 4 cycles are a disaster waiting to
happen. The larger ones seem to think they are the best thing since sliced
bread. What is the truth.

The basic 4 cycle engine has been around for a long, long time! Even though
they have not been big sellers until recently 4 cycle outboards have been
around for a long time as well.

One reason for the big push towards 4 cycle outboards is that the
conventional 2 cycle engine is getting outlawed from many lakes and some
states (like California). In order to meet the emission regulations you
either need a 4 cycle or one of the new 2 cycle motors. 4 cycle I know and
understand. It is a proven technology and they aren't pushing any limits.
The new 2 cycle engines, on the other hand, have not survived the test of
time.
