Winter, the Russians had the alcohol thermometer freeze at -125. Coldest I think I ever felt was a bright sunny day at the 1960 Winter Olympics. Did not have warm snow boots and was about 5F. Have been in colder weather, but better equipped. |

We spent a few days at Squaw Valley but it was summer time. We were are the Squaw Valley Creek resort, nice place but parking is a PITA. Is a nice area. Wife does not want to ski anymore, so we don't. We have friends who have Tahoe cabins, so do get up in the area. We take the boat up sometimes. But expensive for one or two trips. They have a quagga mussel sticker and inspections. Adds cost. Mostly fishing and picnic on the island in Emerald Bay. |

Coldest I have ever been in was -21*F twice. First time was January 1, 1968. I had a New Years Eve party at my house. After the party broke up I went outside and started up my car. It was my 1st car a 1959 Ford Galaxie with a manual transmission. I depressed the clutch and started the car. I let it warm up for a few minutes. It was in 1st gear. I finally started down the road. I went to shift into 2nd but the shifter would not budge. I drove about a mile in 1st gear before I could get it into 2nd and about another half mile or so I managed to get into 3rd gear. Once it warmed up it shifted fine.
The second time was in 1977. We had a place in Harrison Michigan about half way up the lower peninsula. The snow on the ground was knee deep and I decided to take a hike through the woods. With the deep snow I was actually starting to sweat from the effort to make it through the deep snow so before I got chilled I had to turn around and head back home. This past January we hit -16*F. It was the second coldest winter since record keeping began so says the National Weather Service. So much for global warming.

I would have stayed at Mammoth if it was me. Traffic was horrible trying to get around the lake. We went in around the west side and out to the east and down through Carson City. Both sucked. Originally we were going out of Reno but a last minute call put in a side trip to LaJolla and out LAX. Long drive. Our friends cabin are on are west Side. 1/2 and 3/4 way down. So not as much traffic. We come in over highway 89 and us 50 most of the time. |
