Someone recommended AVG and I've used it ever since. The only time it has an affect on computer speed is when you have initiated a full scan of your computer. I don't think it's "all consuming" but I think it's annoying that you *have* to have it installed and use it to transfer stuff from your PC to an Apple device like the iPad. If iTunes is installed on your computer it regularly knocks on your door looking to be updated or offering other services I am not interested in. That's why my iPad now sits, unused. That's another thing ... Seems like every couple of weeks when I *did* use it, it wanted to update it's OS, a process that seemed to take forever. Seems to me that Apple used to be a sorta cool, technology driven company but has shifted to being totally marketing/sales driven in recent years. Apple updates its software from time to time. So does Microsoft. I can't recall being "offered" other services from Apple other than by email. The Microsoft Windows updates are mostly security related and don't radically change how your computer looks, feels or acts. The iPad OS updates are like starting all over again, similar to when you first bought and used it. It also asks for you Apple ID and password each time, which I can never remember because I rarely use anything Apple. The last time I updated the OS on the iPad (about a month an a half ago) I wasn't sure it was even going to run and the screen looked totally different when it finally finished. I guess I am just used to PCs and Window operating systems. Apple used to have a reputation of being simple and intuitive in it's use. Not so much anymore, IMO. |

Basically, if you use it once a shift, leave it on. What I recall to have heard from some computer experts (based on tests performed by independent test laboratories) several years ago were that each power cycle on hard drives could equal up to 300 hours of normal operation. Back in the late 80's, the average MTBF for hard drives could be up to 50,000 hours of operations. At the and of the 90's, the average MTBF for hard drives had increased to up to 300,000 hours of operation. Nowadays, some manufacturers advertise hard drives (not SSHD's) with an MTBF of up to 2,000,000 hours of operation, or roughly equal to about 230 years!
