I am not sure how accurate it is these days but IBM determined in the
early 90s that a single power off/on cycle on a 3,5" drive had the
same impact on MTBF as running 8 hours. Basically, if you use it once
a shift, leave it on.

What I recall to have heard from some computer experts (based on tests
performed by independent test laboratories) several years ago were that
each power cycle on hard drives could equal up to 300 hours of normal
operation.

Back in the late 80's, the average MTBF for hard drives could be up to
50,000 hours of operations. At the and of the 90's, the average MTBF
for hard drives had increased to up to 300,000 hours of operation.
Nowadays, some manufacturers advertise hard drives (not SSHD's) with an
MTBF of up to 2,000,000 hours of operation, or roughly equal to about
230 years!

Oh, and just for the record:
I attended my first computer course back in 1978 - that's now 35 years
ago and before things like PCs and Microsoft Windows even existed on the
market...
And I bought my first "home computer" back in 1979...
