What? No, I wasn't a "runner" for the Kansas City Star. I was a
reporter, then a reporter-feature writer, and if I wasn't otherwise busy
late at night (I worked for the AM editions of the paper), I ripped,
edited, and marked up wire service copy for the foreign desk, and
wandered up to the composing room to make sure my corrections made it
into the early AM editions. I learned a great skill up in the composing
room...how to read the type in forms upside down faster than most people
can read rightside up.
