What are you going to use the gun for?

Recreation?

Hunting?

Utility?

Killing people?

Be sure you have the flares. I carry a thrift shop five buck aluminum
ballbat on the back seat floor. I also carry a two buck thrift shop
softball which gives my lawyer something to work with, if some cop
says it is a dangerous weapon. Hell, nearly anything is a better
weapon than bare hands, and those are dangerous.

12 ga shotgun is very limited in range and due to the shell size, limited in
firepower and very limited in accuracy.

The 12 ga finds limited use.

I have a shotgun suitable for skeet, birds from quail to geese, deer,
and people.

They put one in every cop car instead of an automatic weapon, because
they lack sufficient firepower? In Iowa shotguns are required for
deer, and special slug barrels will group four inches at 100 yards. The
most popular deer rifle will most often do little better.I don't call
that seriously limited in accuracy. Anything over that range with a
rifle calls for a nice steady support for the rifle, something
unavailable at .sea. As for. firepower, nothing is deadlier at close
range, and 8 shots is generally enough. If you think you can hit
anything at even 100 yards with a rifle from a moving boat, you are
probably deluded. A shotgun is powerful enough for lion at close
range. Is that what you mean by lacking in firepower. One expert can
put a pound of lead in the air in less than two seconds with a pump
gun. He can shuck it faster than most autos cycle. The guy can break 8
clay targets hand thrown together, in less a second. Satterwhite is
his name.
The job calls for a fifty cal mg, actually. Hose the outboard on the
pirate boat instead of just killing them all. Let those surviving the
gunfire paddle two hundred miles to shore. Their boat is probably
unsinkable although you might set it on fire. Be nice to make them
swim a hundred miles or more. Toss them a gallon jug of water so they
can fight over it. Then leave. If you call the cops maybe they will
just do time.

I carry a remington mariner with every third round a slug just in case you
have to reach out and touch someone. I also carry a mini-14 folder but if
you think about it... shooting at someone over 100 yards is not exactly self
defense. With all the boats out there, I would bet if you put up a
defense most pirates will find another vessel to steal.

BTW... ALWAYS declare...I know someone whose AMMO count was a few bullets
off and he was detained for a few hours in the bahamas

Subject

Sawed off, double barrelled 10ga shot gun with a rifled slug in one
barrell and "00" buck shot in the other.

Illegal as hell, but deadly in close quarters.

Shoot first, forget to ask the questions.

What's left probably can't answer them anyway.

This request is not a joke. It is a very serious question to a very serious
issue. Piracy is very real, it is everywhere, even within our own home
waters. The reasons may be drug related or simple theft, but the result can
be as severe as loss of life. Now for you gunk holers that venture as far as
the entrance of the bay, this information probably isn't much use, but for
the serious long distance sailor see www.icc-ccs.org There you can request
the latest report on Piracy from the IMO. It is very interesting reading.
You will find advice as well, but firearms are not mentioned.

What's the best boat gun to have.
What should I look for in a good boat gun (Pistol & Rifles).

Should you declare you have weapons aboard or just have a good stash
spot for overseas cruising?

Please no Wilbur answers. I'm looking for real knowledge and practical
experience, not wanna-be advice.

Fred
