Best Boat Guns?
What's the best boat gun to have.
What should I look for in a good boat gun (Pistol & Rifles). Should you declare you have weapons aboard or just have a good stash spot for overseas cruising? Please no Wilbur answers. I'm looking for real knowledge and practical experience, not wanna-be advice. Fred |

So show the shotgun, and hide the pistol really really well. Or don't have one. Casady Agreed......... 12 ga pump 18" barrel, use #4 shot or goose shot. No need for the 3" mag or 00/buck. Big pattern , easy to mover wepon around confined areas, and wont put too may leaks in your boat or kill the friendly on the other side of the bulk head. USMC adopted a newer auto loader shotgun. Check that out for ball dragging effect. Or go to discount store and get a Rem 870 for $200. Bob |

Any time some Rube asks what's the *best* anything it indicates to me they are too stupid to understand that there is no such thing as *best* for every situation. There can only be a best for specific situations. For example, if you wished to ward off a small pirate vessel that was approaching you a 50 caliper sniper rifle would be the best by virtue of the fact that you could hit them before they could likely get in range to hit you unless they were similarly armed or had a 50 caliber machine gun mounted on deck. An Exocet missile would be your only hope in that case. And, if you are in a close quarters situation a 12 gauge shotgun would probably be best to repel boarders. But watch the stays and shrouds! And a pistol would be best to keep near your berth to blow away boarders who happened to have gotten into your accommodation. So, as you can see, you must first evaluate your cruising grounds and then ship the appropriate weapon(s) for those situation most likely to eventuate. Myself, I ship a fully automatic Kalishnakov and long banana magazines, a 12 gauge, double barreled, sawed off but legal length shotgun, a 357 magnum revolver with alternate snake shot and jacketed hollowpoint rounds, and a 50 caliper sniper rifle with night scope and range finder/computer for windage and autoheight for distance (windage) calibration. Given a steady platform I can blow an enemy's head off his shoulders at 1/2 mile distance. You've got to decide if you're a man first, though, before you ship the first gun. If you don't view a firearm as deadly force and deadly force only but as some "deterrent" (like a weenie liberal) then you'd best remain unarmed. If you decide to carry weapons do declare them but do have one pistol well hidden that you don't declare. But if you should have reason to use that hidden gun make sure you are in a place where you can get rid of any bodies. You don't want the authorities to know you were holding out on them. If they find out you were you can kiss your declared arsenal goodbye (and probably your freedom as well) as most countries require you to turn weapons over to the authorities for impoundment until you're ready to depart their port or country. I hope this helps. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Wilbur Hubbard Allied Seawind 32, "Sea Isle" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |

Best Boat Guns?
Pump action 12g shot gun alternating between 00 buck (1st load) and slugs. For more distance, an good old bolt action Mauser. Both are simple, effective and should not cost too much. Forget the fancy 'boat guns'. Too tempting to be 'admired' by customs. Also forget the hand gun, if folks get that close it is another story anyway. Training and willingness to pull the tiger (as well as being able to know when the time is right and when it is not) is more important that the firearm. -al- |

Joe was skipper of the ill-fated, ill prepared, ill-sailed and ill-conceived pilothouse motor sailer, Red Cloud. Seven Seas Sinbad is posting from Miami Beach. That's a far cry from Texas. Ain't no way Joe could have gotten from Texas to Miami Beach unless he drove or flew. Ha ha ha ha! -- Gregory Hall |

wrote: If you encounter Bad Guys who can get you from out passed 100 Yards, then your just out of luck anyway, and are going to have a Bad Day. Favorite pirate weapon is the AK47. It outranges a shotgun, but you can have a rifle as well, if either you or them can actually get any hits. If the sea is calm you might, but hitting is very hard if the boat is moving around. Expect to shoot at close range. Many serious pirates have RPG antitank rockets. Basically if they seriously come for you your ass is grass, or at least you will lose wallet, watch, handheld radios, the stuff they can easily grab. On the other hand, a few tracers in their general direction before they get close, and they might decide to call it a day. Weapons are a good idea, but you will probably be outnumbered and outgunned. The odds are on your side to not be bothered except in a few places. Stay out of the known pirate waters. And have at least a shotgun,.The good news is that you are likely to encounter fishermen, not really tough guys, grabbing an opportunity, and those can maybe be shot or scared off. Casady |
