Mistake number one - Florida.

Way too many NICE places to sail, in DEEP WATER, rather than be stuck in
sandbar, reef and manatee country staring hard at the depth sounder,
praying for DEPTH...(c;

Y'all come up ta Charleston. Hell, there's more depth at the marina than
in FLORIDA!...(c;

Larry .. someone I know visited Charleston recently. Loved the place.

I got to thinking after I read the Skip posting.

Isnt' there an old sailor saying "when in doubt, stay out"

Then there is the old dating bar saying .. "when in doubt pull out".

Can never remember which is for boating.. probably both.

Yes, but tell us about the strong current in the city marina that
makes docking an adventure, and tell us about the tax men lurking
about trying to snare a few loose yacht $$$s.

If you do decide to go anyway, have dinner at the Charleston Grill:

You will not regret it.

Bring $$$s.

I'll second that. Bring $$$$...(c; We love Yankees with $$$$. Have
since around 1870 when it was discovered they weren't going to leave.

When the money runs low eating at the tourist traps downtown or in
"Doctor Country" in Mt Pleasant, lemme know. The best restaurant, for
the money, is Eastern Buffet, in the shopping center behind Eckerd's
Drugs at the corner of Ashley Phosphate Rd and Dorchester Rd in nasty,
ol' Nawth Charleston, where the gentile are starting to move. A HUGE
array of Thai, Chinese, including an amazing array of sea foods is
$5.95/lunch or $7.95 for dinner (er, ah, including the all-you-can-eat
CHEEZE CAKE!) All you can eat crab legs boosts that to $20/head, if you
like.

Best not to get between me and the food tables...(c;

How anyone can serve 8 shrimp dishes, scallops, 6 crab dishes, baked
salmon, huge salad bar, huge dessert bar with real ice cream, and 3 big
hot bars full of Asian food....and STILL be in business...remains a
mystery.

What's fun is to bring rich friends from Mt Pleasant and downtown to
Eastern Buffet for dinner. They pay $7-10 for one tiny slice of CHEEZE
CAKE! How stupid is that? I bet NONE of you can eat just one piece of
this little chocolate cake with chocolate creme layers topped with a
baked on layer of syrup they make....

Yeah, I like Charleston, too, Larry, but I can remember being directed to a
slip @ the Maritime Marina that had "plenty of water" for my 3 1/2 ft draft
cat.
When we couldn't get closer than 6 ft off, I suggested to the harbormaster
maybe there wasn't as much water as he thought. At least he cleated our
docklines and hooked up the end of the water hose we tossed him.

Cheapskate! The damned "Maritime Center" is only good for DJing wedding
parties and Friday Night radio parties.

It's the WORST place to dock a boat in Charleston...because that's NOT
what it was for...but had to do something to earn money when the fishing
fleet refused to get near it. Huge government waste project,
extraordinare.

Ashley Marina - about 25' at low tide (Tides are 5-6' here)
City Marina (except near shore where the cheap *******s won't dredge) -
about 20' at the outside docks (kept clear by those tidal currents
someone else wanted to point out).
Charleston Harbor Marina - 25-30' right on the edge of a 50' deep ship
channel going out to sea.

We gots lots slips with deep water. Many are at party docks!

You got that one right. I was just passing through, and Maritime was the
only place I could get.
