Lots of folks with old boats rip out the Atomics and replace them with outboards. It gives back some stowage and is a cheap alternative if you like to sail. Main problem with an outboard (apart from the other poster's comments) is hobby-horsing: in any kind of sea, the outboard alternates from being swamped to having the prop out of the water as the boat pitches.
