Interior carpet recommendations?
Boat had horrible domestic (Red) carpet which luckily caught diesel
overflow! I took it all out and found only floorboard underneath, painted grey. I would like to put something on the floor and am inclined toward sisal, but edging might be a problem(?) Anyone done something like this? -- Molesworth |

I haven't but the sisal I've seen had an edge which was woven into something resembling rope. That should address the edge issue. My concern about any such covering would be that it could move between the sole and the person treading thus causing a loss of footing. What fastens carpet or other fabric coverings down? You could just enamel and add some non-skid, I suppose. I'd be inclined to do that if it'd look ok. |

Anyone done something like this? -- Molesworth My Rawson 30 had carpet when I bought it, eventually I want to put in teak and holly. To replace the worn carpeting in the meantime, however, I got some indoor-outdoor carpeting that has rubber backing and alternating raised piping (for lack of the proper word) running lengthwise. I used the old carpeting as a pattern to cut the new, and it dropped right into place. It doesn't move at all no matter how much motion the boat endures, and is very non-slip underfoot. The cut edges don't unravel at all, as the fabric is fused to the rubber backing. I think I got it at Lowe's. That was years ago -- so much for "in the meantime." |

I've seen what I believe you are referring to as "sisal" pads in freight elevators and the edges were finished by sewing a "binding", for want of a better word, a narrow piece of contrasting colored cloth folded around the edge, which appeared to be to prevent the "sisal" from unraveling. Anyone done something like this? -- Molesworth You need the rubber-backed flock carpeting which is sold in many carpet shops and is waterproof. This stuff is marketed under different brand names, in many designs, and is quit thin and easy to cut. The flock design is embedded into the rubber, and therefore has no fraying problems when cutting to shape to fit curved cabin soles. Dennis |
