Hi,
I have just developed a new marine weather forecast site which I would really like feedback from sailors on. The web site is located he http://www.worldwildweather.com One of my major concerns is whether the way you specify a sailing route by waypoints and get a marine forecast along the route (called Route Weather on my web site) is intuitive enough. What do you think? I am also very interested in feedback on other things on the web site. Best regards, Jesper |

JG, Thanks for your feedback. I don't get any errors on the browser I have tested with. I obviously miss some. What browser are you using? Do you prefer text based navigation or is it simply a matter of image size? Best regards, Jesper |

Best regards, Jesper The initial error was with IE7 with a refresh after I click on the map. I get the error every time. I'm talking about clicking on the map on the left, not the one on the right. I tried with Opera (9.6) - doesn't have the error. I tried with Firefox (3.0.4) - doesn't have the error. I do prefer text navigation, but don't mind image nav., as long as I can understand the result. If I click on my region on the map, I get three images, but it's not clear that I got to the right place. Maybe bigger is better... don't know if that'll help... definitely better resolution and bigger would help, but obviously would affect loading time. I haven't yet made an email service but that is definitely on top of my todo list. I have however made a low bandwidth version of the web site (or more accurately parts of the web site - it is only weather at a specific location and weather along a route which is available in the low bandwidth part): http://www.worldwildweather.com/mobile The low bandwidth version is made for PDA's and mobile phones with good displays (otherwise the plots cannot be easily seen). It can however be used on all devices (including normal computers) with a web browser (best if they have Javascript support). The low bandwidth web site does return plots (size approximately 50-100 kilobytes), so for really slow connections (like Iridium satellite and maybe SSB - I am not aware of how fast a SSB connection is) it is only marginally usable. I am therefore working on the possibility to get a text forecast. This service will be available in the first quarter of next year. Best regards, Jesper |

The right plot is supposed to be used to zoom into your region. When you have zoomed in you can click on the left plot to get a forecast on your location. So you should click on the right plot first until you have zoomed to an appropriate level. I will try to make this more clear (but I will have to think a while on how to do that). Have a great Christmas! A merry Christmas to you too and thanks for the feedback. Best regards, Jesper |

Hi again Capt. JG
I have changed the marine weather forecast application so that it is more clear that you will have to zoom into your area first using the small map. I have done two things: 1. Added a couple of lines of text explaining it at the top of the page. 2. Moved the menu bar to the right since people tend to read from left to right. I can see from my log files that you are not the only one for whom the user interface was confusing. I hope the small update I have made will make it a bit easier. I will though keep this issue in mind and make other changes if I figure out anything. On Dec 25, 12:47 am, "Capt. JG" wrote: The initial error was with IE7 with a refresh after I click on the map. Unfortunately I have not been able to reproduce the error (I have tried two computers with IE7 but the error does not seem to occur on either of them). What I have done is implementing better reporting/ logging of errors - so that I will automatically get more information if an error happens. I hope this will allow me to diagnose the error when it happens again. From my log files I have also discovered a couple of other issues with my application. The most important being: If you type in longitudes and latitudes in the wrong places (so that you type in longitude in the latitude box and vice versa) you will just be informed that there is "No data" at the point. I will implement a check if lons/lats are within appropriate bounds and return a more appropriate error message. If someone type in what they think are valid lons/lats and just gets "No data" they will of course be very disappointed. I am very happy about the feedback I got here (both direct posting here and the errors I discovered from looking for errors in my log files). I hope it is okay to write to this mailing list once again in a month or so to get more feedback - or is that considered spamming? Best regards, Jesper www.worldwildweather.com |
