We have a situation here down in VA Beach where the ASPCA is having to
do a large rescue job on baby pelicans that did not migrate south
becasue tourists fed them all summer and they didn't learn how to
hunt...there are over 100 starved juveniles that they're feeding 5 lbs
of fish to a day...my concern is that they not just get them back
healthy but that they set up some program to teach these birds how to
survive without having to really on human offerings...

Sounds like what the Canadian government did to the Inuit.

Just after Christmas we were at anchor in Tenacatita bay, commonly
known as "The Aquarium" because of all the great rocks to the west of
the bay where the fish flourish. The Mexican locals love to vacation
on this stretch of beach and it was a treat to intermingle with them
and watch them play on the playa.

What they (the locals) didn't know was that about a hundred pelicans
had figured out that this year the aquarium was bursting with life
under the water. We spent days sitting under the palapas watching the
families playing in the water fighting off the pelicans who were
trying to catch their dinner. The pelicans were dive bombing into the
water everywhere, inches away from people who were just trying to cool
off. We heard a lot of screams and men trying to drive them off but
the pelicans never hurt anyone and never went away.

What a show.

I remember standing on the pier at St. Pete FL one day and there was a
flock of pelicans...maybe about 30 of them, just hanfig out. Being a bird
type of person, I walked over to have a chat (those who know me will tell
you that I do indeed talk to birds)..thisfisherman started yelling at me
that they were dangerous and that I would get hurt. pfffttt..they sidled
up to me and made their squaky noises...they weren't averse to me petting
them, either...I didn't have anything to feed them and probably wouildn't
have because it was a fishing area and getting fisher people angry is not
a good thing...when I walked away, they followed for a bit and then
decided since I wasn't good for food they'd go back and harass the guy
that thought they were dangerous...

I too talk to birds. Each morning and evening I put 6 quarts of Milo,
millet, and/or black oil sunflower seeds in the street (cul ds sac), where
my cat cannot sneak up on them. I just sit and watch them and talk to them.
Over the years, I have learned that when my cat does bring one in through
her door and let it loose in the house, the way to catch it unharmed is to
put the cat out, talk soothingly to the bird until it relaxes, then just
pick it up, take it outside, and open my hand. I have one white wing dove,
slightly injured by my cat, that will come and sit very close to me.

It's going to be very duffucult this spring back at my house in Michigan
where my barn swallows have used out house and garage for over 20 years
as the major nesting ground in the area. I told the tenant that they
will roost in the farage and explained that if he wanted to be free of
mosquitos, he'd put up with them (ponds on the properties to either side
of us...untreated)...he didn't seem to be to thrilled with that...I hope
they will go nest in the eaves of the barn instead or in the
overhangs..when the population has grown (the babies all come back...I
have 2 females that for the past 5 years feek no fear about flying into
the laundry room when I leave the farage door open and sitting and
churping at me while I do laundry)...I'm still trying to get used to the
new birds down here..they have a non-feed rule here at Gestapo APts. and
you can't put feeders on your sills or patios. And if someone sees you
feeding the geese or gulls over at the man amde lake, watch out! There's
a big crane that sits on the dock over there. too. I have had one
conversation with him..he seems quite content to sit and listen. Alas,
though, there are no swans. I have a special thing for them.

There's a crane at our marina ,too.
It's used to lift boats in/out of the water.
I've never talked to it, though.

We have a big blue heron that likes to hang out here, he
left a dinner-plate size greeting on our foredeck last
fall...

The honeymoon was the first year, we are now into year number four and
I'm ready for a lady gabfest! It would be great to get together with
you two.
