I'm just mentioning Jon, not just noticing!
Scout "JG" wrote in message ... Bwahahahaaa... you've just noticed this? Neal does this with anyone who disagrees with him on anything. Get with it Scout. -- "j" ganz @@ www.sailnow.com "Scout" wrote in message ... "Gilligan" wrote in message news ![]() "Scout" wrote in message ... "Gilligan" wrote Well, what if it be my vice, My pleasure to displease--to love men hate me! So sad ~ these words! Preemptive scorn is scorn of self and fear of self-worthlessness! Why does Captain Neal doubt himself so? Spark Notes (similar to Cliff's): Summary - Act II, scene viii Le Bret argues that Cyrano is ruining his chances of becoming a successful man or a famous poet. Cyrano says he will live according to his ideals and that he has no interest in making friends with unworthy men. Suddenly, Christian enters. Your interpretation is a bit different. Where does the difference come from? Just an observation. Have you noticed how people automatically condemn things that challenge them rather than risking failure by accepting the challenge? Students do this routinely, claiming things they haven't mastered (read as: fear they cannot master), are stupid or unworthy. Cyrano and Captain Neal both exhibit this behavior. In the case of the latter, CN condemns me as unworthy because I have challenged his political point of view. He doesn't appreciate my opinion regarding our president's education reform initiatives, so he attacks everything from my writing style to my manhood. Whether either is lacking is irrelevant to the point of discussion. That, and only that, is my point in challenging CN. I've shared some of what I've experienced in America's public schools. Let CN bring what he knows to the table. That is where this branch of the discussion broke away. Kurt Vonnegut said once that he wished to tell a story without using any profanity. He said he had an important message to give, and he knew that many people would not want to hear the message. He said he also knew that if he used vulgarity of any sort, he would be giving those people the justification they needed to turn away from what was important. I haven't used any profanity either ~ so those who don't want to hear my testimony will have to find or fabricate some other reason to turn a deaf ear. I suppose a poorly focused paragraph works for CN. Scout |

Scout, sometimes living in a megalopolis can have strange effects

Well, perhaps the outlook isn't wholly optimistic: it depends on
the level of physiological and psychological damage you've suffered. But never mind! Just remember that humans evolved in a high-radiation environment! It made us what we are! And you'll feel much better if you keep firmly in mind that planets are the unsafest places to live in space! (your problems are nothing the next asteroid impact can't cure). Flying Tadpole (poring over all the circular structures discernible in the South Oz outback, each with their scatter of pretty stones, and checking real estate around Mt Gambier, which blew up a few years prior to Pompei. Ah the joys of country life). Scout wrote: So once I've moved out to the country, with its radon and emf radiation and coliform, my mind will unfog and I'll awaken from this horrid dream? But aren't you mixing your metaphorical characters a bit too freely? I
mean, Cyrano ne'er tilted any windbagmills no matter slow or fine they grind. Gilligan wrote: DE GUICHE (who has controlled himself--smiling): Have you read 'Don Quixote'? CYRANO: I have! And doff my hat at th' mad knight-errant's name. DE GUICHE: I counsel you to study. . . A PORTER (appearing at back): My lord's chair! DE GUICHE: . . .The windmill chapter! CYRANO (bowing): Chapter the Thirteenth. DE GUICHE: For when one tilts 'gainst windmills--it may chance. . . CYRANO: Tilt I 'gainst those who change with every breeze? DE GUICHE: . . .That windmill sails may sweep you with their arm Down--in the mire!. . . CYRANO: Or upward--to the stars! I remembered that part... one of my favorite pieces of literature... BTW aren't you afraid of invoking the Crapton's ire, quoting something that's not only "Theatah" but so blatantly French? Observe the above dialogue. Cyrano was not tilting at windmills, nor was he planning to. He was pointing oout De Guiche's error in assuming that Don Quixote's madness would inevitably lead to failure & humiliation... a veiled threat against Cyrano. DSK |

The windmills are acknowledged in the death scene as Cyrano sums up his
life: CYRANO: Why, I well believe He dares to mock my nose? Ho! insolent! (He raises his sword): What say you? It is useless? Ay, I know But who fights ever hoping for success? ------------------------Right here and the next line I fought for lost cause, and for fruitless quest! You there, who are you!--You are thousands! Ah! I know you now, old enemies of mine! Falsehood! (He strikes in air with his sword): Have at you! Ha! and Compromise! Prejudice, Treachery!. . . (He strikes): Surrender, I? Parley? No, never! You too, Folly,--you? I know that you will lay me low at last; Let be! Yet I fall fighting, fighting still! (He makes passes in the air, and stops, breathless): You strip from me the laurel and the rose! Take all! Despite you there is yet one thing I hold against you all, and when, to-night, I enter Christ's fair courts, and, lowly bowed, Sweep with doffed casque the heavens' threshold blue, One thing is left, that, void of stain or smutch, I bear away despite you. (He springs forward, his sword raised; it falls from his hand; he staggers, falls back into the arms of Le Bret and Ragueneau.) ROXANE (bending and kissing his forehead): 'Tis?. . . CYRANO (opening his eyes, recognizing her, and smiling): MY PANACHE. Curtain. "DSK" wrote in message .. . But aren't you mixing your metaphorical characters a bit too freely?
