jeffies, you are just to stupid to even talk with.
case in point: Hey Jaxie, maybe I should repost where you claimed that the variation was meaningless because you never bothered to use it. Or the time you claimed "dip" was a function of the compass, not of the Earth. How about when you insisted that gyrocompasses are incapable of aligning automatically? olde fart, don't read this until tomorrow morning when you are sobered up a
bit. We were *heading* 190* (that's south, olde fart) trying to skirt inside the Gulf Stream when an eddy (the Gulf Stream has lots of eddies, olde fart, but we didn't expect something like this) caught us and changed our COURSE to 90* even as we maintained our *heading* of 190*. We -- tacked -- to head ++ west ++ to get away from the eddy. Jax, Are you trying to say Drift? Now lets recap a bit. You stated that you were head south, west of the Gulf Stream following the shelve line. Your compress was What? Your course change from 90 degrees to a 190 degrees in a eddy? Now was this Eddy from the Gulf Stream? Sounds strange. If you were heading South, what were you doing on a 90 degree course? That easting. If you were drifting 190 degrees you were finally going South! Why did you tack? If you were driven South by a Eddy of the Gulf Stream, Where the hell in the Atlantic were you that the Gulf Stream was flowing SOUTH? Jax, even if it is only in your mind, Do yourself a favor and dream of something that doesn't involves the Gulf Stream. You can't get the "Stream" to go South. You can't go South on a course of 90 degrees! You sure do get caught in some mighty tall tails (WHOOPER) when you start LYING about your experiences in the Gulf Stream. We can put this one with your other time you had the Gulf Stream flowing SOUTH. How do you ever expect sailors to believe such BS? Ole Thom |

Thom, you must remember, that Jax is an amateur when it comes to many
things, especially navigation. You must understand that when he makes a statement that his "course" was 190 and upon encountering an eddy, became 090 (numbers from memory) that his amateur status means that this statement can be taken in a number of ways, but he is not aware of that fact. I believe he is trying to say that his CMG was originally 190, but when they hit the eddy, it became 090, not, that his compass heading went from 190 to 090. "Course" means many things, which are usually explained in the context of how the term is used. In Jax's case, he is neither experienced nor intelligent enough to realize this, and thus explain it in his post. He also frequently uses this gambit to create a useless argument which is really, nothing more than a "word game" otn Thom Stewart wrote: Jax, Are you trying to say Drift? Now lets recap a bit. Jax,
In your reply found in Jon's reply I believe of the 18 th. You say you ducked into Port to miss the "Norther" in the Gulf Stream. Later on you claim 100 miles off shore following the Continental Shelve. Where were you when you "ducked into port?" Also have to ask; why 100 miles off shore where the Gulf Stream had an influence on you when your designation was in Florida. Those replies do generate questions from an old man (Ole Fart) (Drunk) What ever. Abuse accepted but answers still requested. By the way is you check a Chart you will find that to be 200 hundred miles off shore and be on the edge of the shelf you are in the Caribbean and getting farther away form Florida. Why would you be that far off the Coast when the Counter-current, flowing South is in closer; about 10 miles? You can answer anyway you want this is my finally comment on "LIFELINE" Topic is much to far removed. Ole Thom |

thom, I said we "would have" ducked into port had we been two days later
passing Cape Hatteras, as at the point there was an unexpected gale coming out of Maine, with 50 foot waves expected in the Gulf Stream. We actually lucked out enough to go through CH (or actually through the rocks off the end of CH) in a near flat calm. The Gulf Stream -- at that time anyway -- was running quite close to CH and we were trying to avoid the Stream as best we could. St Augustine, indeed Miami past which the Gulf Stream passes very closely) is quite a bit west of CH. The eddies of the Gulf Stream come and go, and move around even more than the Stream does, which itself also moves around quite a bit. The boat owner did not wish to pay for Jenn Clarke's prediction service. Indeed, other than finding outselves in the Stream when we didn't want to be, and the weird eddy that pushed us 100* off our heading, we didn't have any real problems with the Gulf Stream. No, Pamlico Sound can be a pain North to South unless you're shallow draft.
There's no sense in going inside at that point. Jax is referring to Diamond Shoals which are easily avoided in good weather by going outside of the lighthouse. There are no rocks in the area. Jax is referring to Diamond Shoals which are easily avoided in good weather
by going outside of the lighthouse. There are no rocks in the area. two things. a.) the markers are there to mark things you can hit, and b.) I remember many, many more lights for two or three or four or more hours while we were going through at night. I remember at one point we were within 20 seconds of turning around because we couldn't see the next light, when I saw it, followed by maybe 10 seconds later by the owner, who was a career merchant marine and had a couple decades racing offshore. jeffies, if you don't think there weren't things to hit and break up a boat there, certainly the owner of the boat did. And avoiding the Gulf Stream to the east was the reason we were in so close. jeffies, guys in training wheels don't normally even think of rounding Hatteras, predictions of a flat calm or not. |
Lifelines
Those may be "tings ta hits" but they are not rocks. The only reason someone
would claim there are rocks there is if they never were there at all. Of course, its also possible you were hiding down below, scared ****less at the thought of passing Hatteras. Or maybe you were hanging over the side. One thing is for sure, you weren't navigating! "JAXAshby" wrote in message ... see those markers and lights out there jeffie? dems tings ta hits. |
