Good point, although the release valve lets the ram out slowly. Also, if
half the fluid was water where did the hydraulic fluid go??

Water sometimes gets in when it's released under load too quickly
particularly in cold conditions.
Fluid isn't drawn back fast enough and air/water is sucked in past the
seals.
What bike?
Got myself an Apollo LSX1.2 with the 6061T6 ally frame last year.
