Default Anyone Know Anything About This Unusual Boat? It's Now For Sale.

Last week, I posted a question here about this boat. The boat is now
for sale on the Orlando craigsist. Here's the link:

I'm still wondering what it might have been used for.

With that flat bottom, it would only be practical on extremely flat and
calm water. They said it was a military patrol boat, but I can't imagine
what they were patroling. It looks too small for VN, they used much
larger river boats in the Delta.

Unless you planned on using this boat in very calm area, I would not
consider it, even if it was in good shape. This boat needs LOTS of
work. I would think you could find a beter fix it upper, with would be
appropriate in more waters for $1000-$1500.

It looks homemade out of corrugated roofing and plywood. It is certainly
one ugly boat, unless you're thinking of buying it. In that case, it has a
certain class that's to be appreciate even though not often seen in modern
boats. Kinda like an old wine.

Yikes.... I'd look for a recent model open aluminim boat. That looks
like some kind of old surplus utility model.

What it's not is military "patrol" boat.

What it looks like is a trapping boat of some sort - gators, fur
trade, maybe even crabbing/crawdads. Based on the images, I'd say it
was largely home built off an airboat hull - the hull is flat and wide
enough and is very similar to prop driven air boat designs. The
givewaway are the splash guards at the stern. I've seen homebuilt
airboat hulls with very similar features to this hull when I lived in
Louisiand in the early '70s.

Another reason I'm thinking trapping boat of some sort are the wide
gunwales which are a good platform for loading and unloading traps.

Frankly, it's worth more as scrap then a boat unless you are really
handy and really want a project that is going to take a while to make
right.

Possible, although along those lines, it could also be some sort of
construction yard tender, but I doubt that because of the spash rails
along the sides of the hull.

I'll go with construction utility workboat. You see boats similar to
this tied up next to a barge with crane and pile driver on it. The
kind of setup that will do a little dredging, maybe building boat
ramps or docks, piers, or bulkheads, even bridges. Boats like this are
used for all sorts of odd jobs around a construction worksite. Same
with oil field service work although it's a bit small, they come in
all sizes.
If it were used by the military, it would have been some specialized
niche situation in a swamp or bayou or other protected flat water.
