Noah,
This is a perfect example of the kind of info you can expect to read in any NG, Gould, one of the more knowledgeable boaters in the NG, throws out a theory that maybe the NE Blackout is the result of a terrorist attack. Is this accurate, as of now it does not appear to be, but it is a great way to start a bull**** discussion that will soon evolve into a political discussion. "noah" wrote in message ... As this thing unfolds, it seems that our local northern NY power company, Niagara Mohawk, experienced a major failure, and knocked down the Northeast grid like a box of Dominos. Coincidently, Niagara Mohawk was sold to a British Corporation a few years ago, and service has suffered ever since. In my opinion, we are vulnerable enough when our utilities are controlled by corporate interests. We are even more vulnerable, as a society, when our utilities are controlled by a foreign corporate interest. I am one of the lucky few with electricity tonight. It's as valid as President Nookular repeating the yet unproven theory that lightning around the Niagara River caused the blackout. I have friends who were fishing the river yesterday. No clouds. Meanwhile: Anyone who's awake has seen news stories about how vulnerable our infrastructure is because of computer security problems. It is entirely possible that this blackout WAS caused by terrorists, but not the kinds who use explosives or airliners. If this is the case, it is also possible that it is still undetected. |

The situation was fairly stupid, anyway. The Airlines were tasked with providing security. They bought the cheapest equipment and personnel they could find to get the job done.... usually through contractors They did, after all, have a profit motive. With 9/11, the Federal Government required them to buy equipment and hire personnel that they simply could not afford to purchase..... certainly, with nobody flying, fuel prices skyrocketing, and no revenue being generated. We already had the FAA which was starved for money. Why didn't we give *them* the money and personnel to get the job done. During the Clinton Administration they were cut back so severely that they didn't have travel budgets sufficient to do adequate routine surveillance. Mark them as victims, too.... during "orange" alerts, they can't even let people into the FAA building to transact normal business..... ever conducted business in a parking lot? Looking at the whole picture, I see nothing that indicates to me that the Republicans have done anything different than the Democrats in taking over another part of American life because they know what is best for my safety and THEY can do it better because, after all, they ARE the government..... and don't question ANY of this because it is a matter of National Security. Down side of this is that the previous workers have been replaced by minimum wage types and wholesale firings of these new "affordable" workers for unsuitability and illegal behavior has been the oft repeated result. You've never lived until you have been screened for any threat you might pose to America and the American people by a guy that doesn't quite have a grasp of the American Language. He want's to see my underwear and I want to see his Green Card..... This is especially aggravating to me, when I know some of the competent, experienced, and articulate people that this guy replaced.... because he would work cheaper and was selected by the government over the more experienced and qualified. Please don't couch all of this in Democrats, BAD... Republicans, GOOD rhetoric. Thus far, other that giving me a better sounding reason why this is "good" for me (and I'm speaking VERY generally) I feel just as violated by this Republican administration as I did by the Democrats. I'm not sure Algore would have done things significantly different. Frankly, that scares and unsettles me. Amen. They both screwed the pooch on this one. I read Gould's post as a way to promote an off the cuff discussion (which in my neighborhood was called a shooting the bull, or bull****). The only info I have is the same as most of the readers in the NG, the power experts believe that the problem was not the result of terrorist, but was a combination of natural factors that overwhelmed the system. Now, if I said that the power failure was the result of Flying Saucers stealing our power, do you have any proof that my statement is bull****? I wouldn't totally discount it, until all of the facts were in, especially when there were some circumstances that did seem out of place. As it were, they weren't connected, but at the time Gould put that theory out, it wasn't out of the realm of possiblility. |
OT- Power outage in NY. Coincidence?

Agreed, and it was therefore ridiculous for Chuck to throw out a theory without knowing the facts. |

Agreed, and it was therefore ridiculous for Chuck to throw out a theory
without knowing the facts. No "theory" was thrown out. Go back and look at the first post in the thread. There's a comment that two guys had been arrested in Seattle, bound for NY, the day before the blackout. Followed by a comment that it was probably a coincidence. By the way, the discussion of theory is one avenue by which to determine and evaluate facts. Scientists do it all the time. To state that it is silly to advance a theory without knowing all the facts is to state that it is always silly to advance a theory. |

Chuck,
The discussion of theory is part of the scientific process, but do you believe that any theory has ever been discussed in rec.boats where a general consensus has been reached? Especially one that involved a terrorist conspiracy and/or government cover-up. If so, that is a major milestone. Wasn't your post really designed to provide a venue for shooting the bull, while we waited for the newspapers and TV's to tell us what was the cause of the power outage. That is the real purpose for rec.boats, sort of like a bunch of neighbor getting together to discuss things they have no knowledge of, and solve the world's problems. If we ever decide wither or not Bayliner is the best boat in the world or the worst piece of ****, ever to be thrust on the public, maybe we can move onto solving the middle east crisis.
