There's a reason they're the number one retailer *and* the number one grocer in the country. I'm glad you don't like it, however..'cause then I don't have to worry about ever running into you there. His dislike of the store is because they are grabbing business previously held by union grocery stores. Give it up already. Wal-Mart is extremely anti-union...and extremely successful...and you hate 'em for it. Your biggest fear is that other corporations will employ the same tactics to become non-union. "If it works for Wally World, it'll work for us." |

news ... the number one grocer in the country. ....only regionally. Their grocery impact is not consistent. Depends on the competition. If you're in an area where there's a spectacular grocery chain, Wal Mart will suck away some business initially, due to curiosity, but the effect doesn't last long. The Wal Mart here carries vegetables which appear to have been driven over. Since 1/3 of my shopping cart gets filled with produce, I won't shop at Wal Mart because it would mean having to shop AGAIN at the real grocery store, just to get produce. Not worth the trouble. Finally, if you do a long-term comparison of costs, you'll find that groceries are NOT cheaper, on average, at Wal Mart. Due to the nature of the grocery biz, it's impossible for WM to consistently command lower prices from the manufacturers. |

My biggest complaint with UFCW is personal because one policy affects seafood - part of my religion: In an otherwise amazing seafood department (in terms of selection and freshness), the meat cutters are the only ones who can handle fish. What some of these guys do to a fish while "cleaning" it is a sin beyond forgiveness. |

I am sure that the service will give you something to think about long after you forget the low price. Grin I never said I bought items from Wal-Mart which required a high degree of after-the-sale service. Nevertheless, can you name even one single brand of "union-made" computers? I use off-the-shelf HP's and Compaq's at home, and made-to-order custom jobs at work. |

Walmart also sends a lot of money to the Walton Foundation...which, along
with the Milton Friedman foundation, is very much in favor of school vouchers...and very much in opposition to the NEA. There's sooooo much for Harry to hate about Walmart...and soooo much for conservatives to love. PS--is Genmar still doing test cases of pairing up with Sam's Club/Walmart? I doubt I'd buy a large ticket item that requires a high level of after-the-sale service, but this is interesting: http://makeashorterlink.com/?D6E613195 "Jim" wrote in message news:0YVZa.85904$cF.27204@rwcrnsc53... The key phrase in my previous message was "If you're in an area where
there's a spectacular grocery chain". :-) "NOYB" wrote in message link.net... If you count only grocery products, and you combine Sam's Club and Walmart's sales, total sales in 2002 were $30 billion...that's $1 billion behind Albertson's and $12 billion behind Krogers. They're expected to surpass both of the others this year. "Doug Kanter" wrote in message ... "NOYB" wrote in message news ... the number one grocer in the country. ...only regionally. I once bought a Commodore 64, at a local K-Mart (Similar store), and it stopped working. I packed it up and returned it. They gave me an exchange for a new one. No customer support hassle. No waiting for repairs. No haggling for prices. Stores like K-Mart and Wal Mart will accept returns on just about anything if you keep the receipt. Dave |
