In taking my son's boat out of long term storage (14 months and 2 winters in
Iraq Welcome home!!) we discovered that the outdrive is "Stuck in the foward gear. The cable is relativly new replaced about 4 years ago by the previous owner, As far as we can tell the cable or shift mechanism is frozen as we cannot bugde it nore than a 1/8" in either direction. Any hints or quick fixes or are we looking at pulling the drive?? Asuming we pull the drive we're also looking for some advise from those of you whom have encountered this problem B4?? Also while its off what else should we be checking or replacing while were at it??? Thanks sooo much Larry |

Forward is a good gear to be stuck in, because that's where you want
to be to remove the drive. You need to pull the drive off!- it's a 20 minute job, and 4 years? you need to grease your U joints anyways- take it off. Then see if it's the lower shift cable, or the linkage into the drive. |

You can also disconnect the shift cable at the shift plate. The main cable
from the control comes back to a plate where the shift interrupt switch is. A second cable goes from there back to the outdrive. By disconnecting the cable there you can figure out which cable it is. You probably ought to go ahead and replace the raw water impeller in the lower unit too. They take a set if they sit for a long time. "LNski" wrote in message news:XCPuc.723$Y21.9@lakeread02...
