As you can see from their volume, 320,000, that the outboard industry

is
very small compared to other businesses.

Wow, Bill. Only 320,00 *total* units. How many 225 four-strokes are

sold
in
a year?

Out of that 320,000, the news release stated that around 40% are sold in

the
US, so that would be around 128,000 units of all ratings from 2hp to

300hp.
The 200-225 would be a small percentage of that.

So the company has to apply a huge R&D cost on that new four-stroke to maybe
only 20,000 engines per year? No wonder they're so expensive.

Just an educated guess is that there are less than 10,000 big Yamaha 4
strokes sold last year. The figures should be out within a few months. You
are right that R&D amortized over a few thousand motors adds up very
quickly. Another reason why all major 4-strokes are built overseas. The Merc
X project may change that statement after it goes into production.

Then you add in the cost of purchasing the necessary factory and equipment
to handle the specialized task of making these four-strokes...and amortize
that over fewer than 10,000 motors per year...and you start to wonder how
they make 'em so cheap. Right Gene? ;-)
