So the company has to apply a huge R&D cost on that new four-stroke to

only 20,000 engines per year? No wonder they're so expensive.
Just an educated guess is that there are less than 10,000 big Yamaha 4
strokes sold last year. The figures should be out within a few months. You
are right that R&D amortized over a few thousand motors adds up very
quickly. Another reason why all major 4-strokes are built overseas. The Merc
X project may change that statement after it goes into production.
