Precisely why I was disappointed Perot whimped out. I didn't necessarily
think he would make a good President, but the message to *both* the
Democrats and Republicans, that they weren't doing their job, would have
been enough.

As a conservative's conservative who does vote in the United States

You are unique. If truly a conservative, you're among a handful I've
witnessed with the ability (and propensity) to be self deprecating.

I honestly thought you were left of center based on your (very
entertaining) posts and thought awareness of self was an exclusively
left thing.

Clearly, I was wrong.

Unless you're yanking our rodes.

No, I'm a conservative, but apparently not a 21st Century Republican
Conservative. I voted for Bush the last time out. It was difficult for
me because I didn';t trust him much and I didn't think he was overly
smart. I would have preferred McCain. I have a lot of problems with
the way Bush has turned out, especially in his budget-busting and in
his foreign policy but he also makes me nervous with his expanion of
police powers. No true conservative wants to see police powers
expanded in the kind of democracy we have had until now. Frankly I
just don't trust Bush.

I don't know what I will do this fall. Hold my nose and vote for Bush
or not vote for president or, gasp, vote for the democrat, if he turns
out to be a reasonable middle of the road type? I wish a true thinking
conservative would enter the races, but Bush surely has the GOP
nomination.

Maybe we need viable third and fourth parties.

The Greens just ain't gonna do it. Karl Rove and Grover Norquist want
to make it a one party system.

I understand that. I wasn't thinking of the greens, although as a true
conservative, I am an environmentalist. The really funny thing about
most of today's conservatives is that they have not a clue about what
true conservatism means. It has almost nothing to do with right-wing
politics.

As another example, a true conservative is outraged at the intrusion
of church into state.

If I were you I'd consider Dean. He's been painted as a "liberal" but
he sure seems a hell of a lot more conservative than liberal to me.

He might be ok but I just don't know a whole lot about him. I am
attracted to the fact that he is a doctor because that assures a
certain level of smarts.

If you're a fiscal conservative and a social moderate-to-liberal, Dean
may fit your bill. But, you did describe yourself as a conservative's
conservative...that could mean you're also a social conservative which,
based on your writing, doesn't seem to fit.

As a true conservative, I oppose the government peeking into people's
bedrooms. I oppose attempts to infringe upon free speech. I also
oppose running up the federal deficit the way it has been done the
last two years while at the same time cutting the taxes necessary to
pay our country's bills.

I do believe, on the whole, Clinton had the country's best interests in
mind. This Bush group just couldn't give a **** for anything but
business and staying in power.

jps

In the balance Clinton was a middle of the roader. I wish he would
have kept his pants zipped.

Of course not, but let's make the analogy a little more applicable to what's
happening in this group. Suppose you go to your marina or clubhouse and find
that some of the members have set up soap boxes at numerous locations and
have taken to loudly declaring their political affiliations and decrying
their opponents throughout the day and night. And while they're at it, they
regularly bring in stacks of newspaper clippings and tracts representing
their favorite causes, and they've taken it upon themselves to "educate" you
by stapling them to every available surface. Would you find this to be
acceptable behavior? Would asking them to tone it down a few notches be
censorship?

Not the same, incompatible.
Ignore them if they bother you, you can killfile someone who continually
upsets you, therefore you will only receive posts directly related to
boating.

What really boggles me is my constant taking of the bait. Harry, is a
liar, JPS and Basskisser are sock puppets, to Gould's defence he
probably knows no better but unfortunately has proven that he is
willing to take things out of context and be outright intellectually
dishonest in defence of his agenda, Kanter might be as bright as Gould
but still driven by political agenda, and here I am, with all my
quirks, trying to have an honest debate in a room where there is no
accounting for what you say, ego and political agenda outweigh truth?
I guess I may need therapy as some other wannabe suggested, but for
now, I am just going to the other corner of the room with the boaters,
and relax, get ready for what should be a great season for boating
related industry. Good luck, and to those of you who boat, see you on
the river.

If you want to engage others in debate, you ought to lighten up on the
namecalling. JPS and Basskisser present their points of view. They're
not my points of view, necessarily, but neither of them seem insane,
just dedicated.
Aside from Miss Smith's constantly repeating every post of Harry
Krause and calling it a lie, I see no evidence of lying. You accuse
Kanter of having a political agenda. Well, you seem to have an agenda
of your own.

Finally, you have no franchise on what you call "truth." Most of what
I have seen of yours posted here is nothing more than opinion. Because
you believe something does not make it the "truth."

What you're saying essentially is that the standards of decorum and common
courtesy that we all accept in our face to face interactions with others are
not applicable in rec.boats. Why is that? Because you can get away with it?

Clams,

A truly novel idea and please do keep us posted on the tally/results. I
personally do not get to sit a read most of the posts, but at least those
who do, have lately been pre-fixing the "OT" in the subject. I just ignore
those completely.

As to killfiles, I do not use them. Some of those same lackeys do post and
hold normal boating related threads, for awhile anyways.

For me, I plan to use the new boat more often. Being in SW Florida we never
have to winterize our boats, although sometimes I do have to put on the LL
Bean fleece for the run. Cabbage Key is ALWAYS open for business, especially
when the fish ain't biting!

Since so many people here wish to impart partisan political influence, I
think the only thing to do is let them.

Therefore........ from this moment on I'll be looking at the originating

OT
posts to see if they come from the DNC or the GOP lackeys. I'm counting
hijacking an on topic thread to make it political as "originating" an OT
thread.

And I'll be voting for the party in November that originates the FEWER OT
posts. :p

Since so many here wish to sway hearts and minds - perhaps if enough

people
lined up with me, it would make them think.
