Default OMC 3.8L Engine/ 1985 Renkin 19ft bowrider.

Hello all, I have a 1985 19ft Renkin Boat with the OMC 3.8L v6
engineand outdrive. I am trying to find out who manufactures the
engine. IE:Chevrolet or Oldsmobile? I need to buy cap and rotor, plugs,
plug wires and freeze plugs and I can't do this until I figure out
whomanufactured the engine. I been looking a lot on the Deja groups
andfound a few topics, I am thinking that it was made by Chevrolet/GMC
butjust want to be sure. Any help you guys can provide me would
begreatlly appriciated. Also would be helpful to figure out which
outdrive I have as well.

Thanks, Radman....

Buick is the obvious answer(231 cid), but it is possible, especially
that year, that it is a 229 cid Chevrolet V-6, which was based on the
305/5.0L V-8, with two cylinders removed.

Is there any way to post a picture(showing valve covers, intake
manifold/water outlet, & distributor location)? I can tell from a
photo. Otherwise, I'll have to check my manuals in the office to see
what was available that year.

In any regard, you do need ignition protected repair parts for the work
you are considering (cap & rotor) and brass freeze plugs, not just
off-the-shelf stuff.

Well after some cleaning off of the intake manifold I finally found the
GM letters stamped on it and also found it stamped on the back of the
engine block. I bought a brass freeze plug today and installed it onto
the engine and finally got the engine running, had to also adjust the
points...

What is a good way to flush out the engine block as far as the cooling
system goes?

Thanks for your input its much appriciated...

Hiya .. I replied this to your rec.bots.building post as well ... I have an
'83 MCM 185 (V-6) 3.8 litre mercruiser (GM) ... it's an odd fire (check the
distributor cam ... sharp lobe, round lobe, ... ) with a 4bbl ... does that
sound close? If so, the Seloc Mercruiser Stern Drives 1964-91 Repair Manual
#3200 should tell you all you need to know.

Glad to be of service,

Another way to look at your 3.8L is that it is a 305 Chevy with 2 center
cylinders removed. The 4.3L is a 350 with 2 removed.

OMC only used the Buick V6 for a few years back in the late 60's.

Your 3.8L is Chevy, and the forerunner of the famous 4.3L.

So much so that my 1977 Buick Skylark with the '231 V6' (3.8L) had a
distributor cap with 8 connectors, two of which were blanked out. Had to
turn it over to see how they did that. Typical GM goofball engineering!

But that was when it was an odd-firing engine, before going to an offset
crank design(cripes - I guess I do remember a few GM gems from school).
