Default this boat has been sitting

my nabor has a glasstream 17' i/o with a 3.0 mercurser in it. it has
been sitting for about 2-2 1/2 years. i'v been thinking about buying
this boat, and talked to my nabor about it a little. it has had no
cover on it, and has not moved in about a year and a half. it has been
exposed to the weather all this time. all i can tell you is that it is
a late 80s model. the paint looks like it just needs a good wash job
and a wax. the interor is starting (well has) moleded, but has no
other damage. other than a little fading. the prop turnd nice and
smoth, the stering feals like it dont want to turn, but the outbord
part of it has about 7" of snow around it, and it could be starting to
sink in to the ground, but i dont know if thats true or not(not untel
the snow melts a little). him and a buddy winterised it a couple
yesars back, after the last time he used it, but i dont know if his
buddy knows what he was doing, i know my nabor dident . i asked what
it would need to run, and my nabor told me all it would is a battery.
now, im no dumbass, i know quite a bit about motors, (not typing or
spelling though) but after a year, even with fuel stabalizer in it,
the gas would be no good. witch meand a good carb job would be in
order, if its not fuel injected, i dont know witch it has. so heres my
queston, what should i look for in inspecting this boat? i want to
drive the price as low as possible, but he thinks is still worth about
2 to 3 grand. id like to get it under a 1000$. it is sitting on a
nice tralier. and how much running can i do out of the water. how
quick do this things heat up? iv drove my car a little with no water
in it, but did not let it get to warm. can you run this boat for 3 to 5
min with no water going throught it, at idle with out hurting it?
pleas tell me all that you can, thanks in advance, tim

No, whatever you do, do NOT run it out of water. You need water to not only
cool it, but also to lubricate the impeller that moves the cooling
water...unless you can get a tank of water big enough to hold enough water
to submerge the lower unit enough, you will have to take it to a lake or
river or a water body of some sort. That's my only comment...whatever you
do, do not run it out of the water...heck don't even try to turn it over
once out of water...you can get little devices that attach to a garden hose
that will feed water to the cooling system, so you might be able to find one
of these for this boat.

Tmark,
If the boat was in good condition, would be worth approximately $2,000.

Without water, you will smoke up that impeller in a hot second, pardon the
pun.

For something like you described above, not seeing it running and the total
lack of care and concern for it by the owner, yeah, under 1000 seems about
right. At least you could part it out and make some money off it, if it
turned out to be a "dog".

Ok, the snow has melted a little, and the lowerunit IS starting to
sink into the groung, just the little fin on the verry bottom. i dont
know how much pressure this is putting on the lowerunit but it cant be
good!! I cant tell if the stering is going to turn ok.

He has taken the plug out of it, and has cranked the toung of the
trailler up so the melting snow (and summer rain) is running out of it.

The mold on the vinel seems like it will clean off without to much
hard work.
and i took off the gas cap, and to my surprise IT SMELED LIKE GAS!!
i thought for sure it would be rotton. i think what im going to do, is
stick something in and get a little gas on it, and see if it will burn.
if it dose, hell it might run.

And he dose have the little things that feed water to the cooling
system on the lowerunit. mabey he'll let me try to start it this
summer.
Any thing else y'all can tell me is much appreciated

Tim.

Well, you sure do appear to be a quite competent individual who knows what
he's doing, so I don't foresee any problems in your boat-owning future...lol

Buy ANY book on boating you can find as it seems you haven't much
experience..if any. If you are for real try CHAPMANS. If spring rain and
winter snow is really draining out of the hull walk away. Doesn't sound like a
good project even for somebody who knows what he is about.
Happy New Year

Dig a hole under the lower unit. Put a plastic bucket in the hole so
it won't fill back up with dirt.

i dont think he will like me digin in his yard.

Not a bad idea.

Why not try to start it now. If it starts, fill the tank with gas.

Put
some stabilizer in there also.

Its the middle of winter here, if I start it, it will have to be
rewinterized. my nabor will not do that.

Please say you're joking here.

no, im not joking. whats wrong with what i said? If the fuel will burn
on a stick or somthing, it will burn in the motor.
Buy a book on boating.

wich one do you recomend?
