I wonder if the girl on the phone knew what she was talking about. I just went and looked - there is nothing about having to have a permanent registration. As long as there is a hull number and you have the correct documentation, there's nothing to stop you from getting the permit. Make sure you are asking for the recreational permit. Later, Tom |

OK...Thanks Tom!
I'll try again tomorrow when they open. Maybe I'll try it online. When it asks for the "Coast Guard Documentation", what do I put there? The Hull Identification Number? Thanks again! That or the Temporary Documentation Registration number. At the very least, I would go one level above a clerk if you do it that way. Good luck. hmmmmmmmm
I tried to obtain one online tonight. I tried entering the hull number, but it was too many characters. I tried entering the temporary number...actually, I don't have anything called a temporary number...just an "Official Number" that is on the "letter that confirms that this office is in the process of applying for Documentation of the above referenced vessel for it's owner(s)." It said that the vessel already had a permit...which it doesn't. I also went to the page where it will allow you to look up info with a permit number, but the permit number wasn't found in the system. I guess I'll have to call tomorrow again. Sigh.... I know I'm gonna get the run around too. This can't be uncommon. People buy boats every day. Don't people that buy fishing boats normally want to FISH on them when they buy them? I can't believe that there is not some system in place better than this. I'm really frustrated! Thanks for the help though Tom! If I get anywhere, I'll keep ya posted. I'm curious about this. I wouldn't settle with a clerk though - take it up the chain for a little and see how it works. Later, Tom |
