I have 1989 Mercruiser 3.0 with power steering. The pump is leaking like
crazy. Can I replace it with and automotive pump? I know you should not do it with other engine parts but I caanot see that this would really apply to a power steering pump. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks for any input. Bear |

I know you should not do I had the same setup a few years ago , it didn't fail so I never had to replace it but it looked so close ( and rusted like it too ) too the auto version that I would be tempted to try an auto version on it. Aside from corrosion problems it may be designed too pump in one direction so you may have too reverse the lines , go for it ! Phil |

Bear You may be able to get new Orings and seals. Had a Mopar (dodge) years ago that just required a new Oring on the reservoir to pump housing. was fairly est ot change. Bill |

Yes, we have fitted "auto-speced" P/S pumps to our boats before with no ill
effect. While I'm sure there are "marine-spec" pumps out there, I wouldn't worry about it. Now electrical items such as starters, alternators, distributors, and even carburetors, should always be "marinized", especially if operated in an enclosed area, but for the P/S pump...go for it. -- -Netsock "It's just about going fast...that's all..." http://home.insight.rr.com/cgreen/ "Bear" wrote in message ...
