power steering pump

I have 1989 Mercruiser 3.0 with power steering. The pump is leaking like
crazy. Can I replace it with and automotive pump? I know you should not do
it with other engine parts but I caanot see that this would really apply to
a power steering pump. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks for any input.
