I wonder how many high schoolers who aren't from well-off families opt
for a continuation of their education in 2-year community colleges,
rather than opt for the military. Two-year colleges seem to be growing
in popularity and enrollment.

They are cheap and most of the credits are transferable. In a lot of
cases all the 2 year college is doing is teaching kids what they
should have learned in K-12 tho. That is certainly true for the first
year anyway.
There are also plenty of 2 year schools that send you on your way with
the certificate you need for a job without the burden of a 5 figure
student loan debt.
